Vivi-Constance duel
New Life as a Max Level ArchmageThe Vivi-Constance duel turns a homecoming into a display of overwhelming force—and then into a desperate effort to buy time. Vivi arrives at the manor expecting a place she recognizes, but the stern combat maid Constance reads her silence as a threat. Their fight devastates the grounds, and Constance’s growing realization that her opponent has never been fighting seriously changes the scene from a contest of strength into a struggle for survival.
Arrival and Challenge
Vivi approaches the palatial manor already bewildered by the unusually large number of maids and butlers. They have been training on the grounds as though they own the place, but she cannot work out why. The sight of her home overwhelms her attention just as she reaches the great stairs. There, a tall, thin woman with gray hair in a bun confronts her. Her severe features and cold, commanding presence prompt Vivi to obey before she has even understood the situation.
The woman is Constance, a super-elite, Titled-rank combat maid. When Vivi does not respond, Constance conjures a massive, ornate battle-axe from silvery mist. Its silver haft and blade look almost too heavy for two hands, yet Constance holds it without the slightest dip in her arm. She snaps it toward Vivi and demands to know whether she refuses the challenge. Vivi replies that she did not come to fight, but will provide a fight if Constance insists. The exchange makes clear that the confrontation is not Vivi’s purpose; it is the consequence of Constance treating her unexplained presence and silence as grounds to attack.
The Duel Escalates
As Constance charges, Vivi casts [Perfect Form] and [Titanic Might], spells that respectively improve agility and strength. She recognizes the danger: Constance is Titled, her abilities are strengthened by defending the academy, and Vivi is a mage rather than a combat specialist. Yet even with these boosts, Vivi can barely perceive Constance’s movement. The deputy headmistress appears in front of her, and the battle-axe descends like an executioner’s blade. Vivi turns aside at the last instant; the weapon misses her by millimeters and tears a huge section from the paved path, cutting onward through the yard.
The exchange rapidly exceeds a normal duel. Constance had initially been holding back, but her attacks grow bloodthirsty. To Nicole, watching, the silver blade appears first in one place and then another, while stray force gouges the manicured yard. The shock of the blows sends gusts through the estate, shaking fruit from trees and snapping branches—including apple trees Nicole associates with home. Vivi answers with magic, launching black flames from her staff. Where the void-fire explodes, the earth vanishes in broad patches, as if the ground itself has been erased.
Vivi judges the fight to be operating at a level in the 1300s or 1400s. The combatants can trade twelve elaborate attacks in the span of two seconds, and even small miscalculations send destructive force into the estate. Constance tries to limit the damage to the manor and yard, while Vivi’s attention is chiefly on ensuring that nobody gets hurt. She is delighted by the fight itself, and her tier-twelve spells knock Constance around without seriously injuring her. Vivi has also placed [Elethelea’s Saving Grace] on Constance as a safeguard: if the spar goes too far, the spell will prevent her death from any known attack, though she would be left in bad shape.
Five White Gloves Against Vivi
Just as Vivi worries that Constance may reach her limit and force the spar to end, reinforcements enter the fight. A blonde woman with pigtails and twin daggers flies into the fray; her golden strikes break against Vivi’s [Prismatic Barrier], though their impact makes the ground tremble. A butler attacks with a black steel rapier, Vivi sidesteps, and more White Gloves join. Vivi finds herself fighting five at once, with even the weakest newcomer wielding Titled-level strength. Rather than discouraging her, the additional opponents send her excitement higher.
The same arrival transforms Constance’s understanding of the encounter. She had believed that, despite the mysterious demon-mage’s strength, she and the others were at least putting pressure on her. Now the five White Gloves’ combined attack cannot break Vivi’s impassive, disdainful expression. Constance recognizes with horror that Vivi has been toying with them from the beginning and still does not consider the fight serious. The apparent struggle between powerful opponents has, from Vivi’s perspective, been an exhilarating test; from Constance’s, it is a defense of her brothers, sisters, and academy against a threat she cannot comprehend or stop.
A Change from Victory to Survival
Constance abandons the hope of killing Vivi. Even with the other White Gloves’ help, she sees no route to victory; the only person on the grounds who might be capable of defeating Vivi may not be enough. Her objective becomes narrower and more urgent: survive, and keep Vivi occupied until help can intervene. Pride gives way to the immediate need to buy time.
Constance holds Vivi’s attention for forty-five agonizing seconds, struggling simply to keep pace. The fight has not reached a winner when a clap rings across the grounds and its shockwave seizes everyone’s attention. The interruption leaves the confrontation unresolved, but not its central imbalance: Constance and her allies have committed themselves to stopping an apparent invader, while Vivi has been enjoying a contest whose danger she has taken care to contain. The duel’s decisive turn is therefore not a finishing blow, but Constance’s recognition that the opponent she hoped to defeat has never been fighting at full seriousness.
