A New Direction in Adoption

A New Direction in Adoption
A sudden sense of purpose
After leaving therapy, Peter decides that he and Eva should pursue adoption. He sees it as a fair alternative because neither partner would have a biological connection to the child.
Hope mixed with unresolved grief
Peter visits Lieve’s grave and feels guilt rather than the love he thinks he ought to feel. Eva’s devotion to their daughter and Peter’s difficulty connecting with her memory remain sharply different.
His adoption plan restores a sense of direction, but it does not repair their relationship. He treats a new family project as a possible answer before he understands how far apart he and Eva have become.
The Concert High

The Concert High
An unfamiliar drug
Steef gives Peter ecstasy before their concert at Amsterdam ArenA. At first Peter feels little, but the music and the drug eventually combine into a powerful sense of belonging and exhilaration.
An unstable bond
Peter idealizes Steef as his closest friend and experiences the crowd as a source of collective love. The night also includes sexual attention from strangers and an after-party at Club Panama, extending Peter’s sense that his life can be reinvented.
The euphoria does not last. Peter returns home overstimulated, restless, and increasingly convinced that unconventional freedom can solve the emotional problems he has not addressed with Eva.
Steef’s Panic and Peter’s Admiration

Steef’s Panic and Peter’s Admiration
A traumatic reaction
At the nightclub, Steef becomes convinced that men are pursuing him. Peter recognizes that his friend is suffering a panic episode and helps get him outside, where Steef admits that reminders of his wartime experiences can make him feel trapped again.
Silence mistaken for wisdom
Peter stays with Steef through the night without demanding explanations. Steef thanks him and asks him not to discuss the episode, strengthening Peter’s belief that silence is the foundation of their friendship.
The intimacy deepens Peter’s dependence on Steef at the very moment the friendship is becoming entangled with sexual rivalry. Peter’s understanding of loyalty will later sharpen into suspicion and a desire to control the people around him.
Signs Become Messages

Signs Become Messages
Songs as private warnings
After the partner swap, Peter hears lyrics as if they were clues about his marriage and his future. He begins treating familiar music not simply as emotional expression, but as a message that can reveal hidden motives.
Weapons and certainty
Peter goes to a shooting range with Steef, where handling a pistol gives him a temporary sense of control. He later acquires an illegal handgun and interprets his increasingly intense thoughts as insight into danger around him.
His jealousy, insomnia, drug-related instability, and fear of losing Eva converge into a paranoid worldview. Instead of seeking help, he starts planning to defend his marriage as though it were a threatened territory.
The Search for Eva

The Search for Eva
Loss turns into pursuit
Peter returns to find Eva gone and discovers her farewell note. He searches the house, contacts people who might know where she is, and becomes convinced that Rebecca and Steef have hidden the truth from him.
A suicide threat becomes a weapon
Overwhelmed by abandonment, Peter puts his pistol to his temple and imagines making Eva responsible for his death. A call from Sanne reveals that Eva is at De Kempervennen, and Peter shifts from despair to urgent pursuit.
He retrieves the pistol and drives to the holiday park, promising himself that he will speak calmly. His stated intention to reconcile coexists with a loaded weapon and fantasies of forcing Eva to recognize his pain.
