Halloween
Night TrainHalloween appears in Mike Hoolihan’s recollection as the night when the Crescent’s strange, imposing houses became a childhood test of nerve. Remembered while Mike is visiting Phyllida Trounce, it links the neighborhood’s present-day setting to the fearful games of his youth.
A Childhood Dare
As children, Mike and the others dared one another to go through the Crescent on Halloween. Mike says he would lead. Wearing a rubber ghoul mask, he knocked at a door and waited; minutes later, a gnarled hand emerged to leave a ten-cent treat bag on the mat. The delayed appearance turns an ordinary exchange of treats into a small suspenseful encounter, with Mike’s mask and willingness to approach marking him as the group’s leader.
The Crescent in Memory
The houses are described as larger, older, and spookier than those elsewhere in the neighborhood. Halloween gives that architecture a particular force: the children approach the doors as a dare, while the unseen person inside controls the pause before the treat appears. Mike’s recollection surfaces because Phyllida Trounce and her stepmother now live in the Crescent, making his visit a passage between the present and a childhood landscape still charged with fear and performance.
