The Economic Exhibition district (VDNKh) is a Moscow neighborhood that serves as the climactic setting for the Night Watch's final confrontation with the Day Watch over the fate of the boy Egor. It is the site where the Light Magician Maxim attempts to kill Egor, where Anton Gorodetsky is stabbed, and where Gesar's long-prepared plan to rewrite destiny reaches its crisis. The district's geography—the "house on stilts" apartment block, the nearby streets, and the Ostankino television tower visible on the horizon—anchors the novel's most intense magical battles and moral reckonings.

Geography and Twilight Character

The Economic Exhibition district is defined by its massive, monolithic apartment blocks, particularly the "house on stilts"—an immense, flat slab of a building set on tall concrete supports that Anton describes as a "monument to the matchbox" and an expression of "morbid gigantomania." This building, where Egor lives with his parents, becomes the focal point of the story's second and third major confrontations. The district also contains the Ostankino television tower, a needle-slim silhouette that Anton sees from the roof of the apartment block and later visits during his flight from the Day Watch. The area is connected by the Exhibition metro station, which Anton uses to track the boy's trail. When Anton enters the Twilight in this district, he observes that the buildings are covered with a thick carpet of blue moss, the Twilight flora that feeds on emotions, and the streets are filled with the slow-moving shadows of ordinary people. The Twilight here, as elsewhere, transforms the familiar urban landscape into a gray, silent world where time moves more slowly and colors fade to sepia tones.

The First Confrontation: Vampires and the Night Watch

The district first becomes a site of supernatural conflict when Anton, having tracked the vampire pair through the metro, follows the Call to an alley near the Cosmos hotel. There he finds the boy Egor under the influence of a female vampire who has already extended her fangs, with a male vampire standing beside her. Anton kills the male vampire using the registration tag's seal and drives off the female, then cleans up the remains—scraping the feather-light dust into a plastic bag and scattering dirty snow over the alley. This initial encounter establishes the district as a hunting ground for the Dark Ones and as the place where Egor's potential as an Other is first revealed.

The Second Confrontation: Maxim and the Inquisitor

Months later, the district becomes the stage for the Maverick crisis. Anton, having deduced that the Day Watch is manipulating the serial killer Maxim to frame him, rushes to the "house on stilts" to prevent Maxim from killing Egor. He arrives to find Maxim already confronting the boy outside the entrance, holding the wooden dagger that has killed several Dark Ones. Anton attempts to reason with Maxim, explaining the Treaty and the Watches, but Maxim—who can see only Darkness and Light in absolute terms—refuses to believe that Egor's destiny is still undetermined. When Maxim attacks, Anton enters the Twilight to defend the boy, but Maxim follows him into that dimension, and the two fight in the gray space. Anton is stabbed by the wooden dagger, which proves ineffective against a Light One but still wounds him. The confrontation is resolved only when Gesar and Svetlana arrive, and Maxim is persuaded to surrender.

The Climax: The Book of Destiny

The district's most significant event occurs on the roof of the same apartment block, where Gesar has arranged for Svetlana to use the Chalk of Destiny to rewrite Egor's fate. The roof is the same location where Anton had earlier fought the vampires and where Zabulon had intervened. Now it is surrounded by a cordon of both Light and Dark Ones, including Tiger Cub, Semyon, Ilya, Ignat, Alisa, and Alisher. A hurricane, generated by the concentration of magical power, lashes the roof as Svetlana draws a protective circle and opens the Book of Destiny. Anton, having gathered borrowed Power from ordinary people along his journey to the district, uses a remoralization spell on himself rather than on the storm or on Svetlana, forcing her to make her own choice. She erases Egor's destiny instead of rewriting it, and the plan collapses. Gesar then reveals that the entire operation was a feint to allow Olga to use the other half of the chalk elsewhere.

The Economic Exhibition district functions as a spatial nexus where the novel's central conflicts converge. Its architecture—the oppressive, gigantist apartment block and the towering television needle—mirrors the overwhelming forces that Anton and Svetlana must navigate. The district is the site of Egor's first encounter with the supernatural, his near-death at the hands of Maxim, and his final liberation from predetermined destiny. It is also where Anton makes his most consequential moral choice, using his accumulated Power not to change the world but to refuse to change it, and where Svetlana chooses love and freedom over the path of a Great Sorceress.
