Novoslobodskaya metro station is the Moscow underground location where Anton Gorodetsky, inhabiting Olga's body, meets Egor by apparent chance and later swaps back into his own body with Olga, a sequence that reveals the Dark Ones' trap and the boy's unresolved destiny.

Location and Setting

Novoslobodskaya is a station on the Moscow Metro's circle line, described as a common enough scene when it is not that late: a girl waiting, maybe for a guy, maybe for a girlfriend. The station's underground environment provides a crucial tactical advantage for Anton, who is hiding from the Day Watch. He reflects that it would be harder to find him underground than on the surface, because even the best Dark Ones would not be able to pick up his aura through the layers of earth, through all the ancient graves that Moscow stood on, among the crowd, in that dense, agitated stream of people. He estimates he has an hour or half an hour before the Day Watch makes that move to comb the stations.

Events at the Station

While standing in the center of the station, Anton, in Olga's body, smokes a cigarette he has bummed from a passerby, casting a mild spell over himself so that people's eyes slide off to the side. He is waiting for Olga to arrive in his body so they can swap back. It is at this moment that he spots Egor, the young Other with weak powers who had been caught up in the big fight between the two Watches six months earlier. Egor's powers are strong enough to penetrate Anton's casual cover. Anton expands the range of his spell to include the boy in the circle of non-attention. Egor, who has grown on the inside, recognizes Anton despite the female body, and they have a brief conversation. Anton explains he is not trailing the boy, and Egor reveals that Boris Ignatievich called him to say the vampire had been executed and that he had been taken off the list of human beings. The boy asks if his parents are still on the list, a question Anton cannot answer. Egor then runs for a departing train. Olga arrives in Anton's body, and they perform the reverse body swap in the middle of the station hall, using the formula "Gesar, we return your gift!" The process is painful and disorienting, but successful.

Narrative Significance

The meeting at Novoslobodskaya is not a coincidence but a destiny node, a point where the threads of reality converge. Anton later realizes that Zabulon could probably influence Egor, sending him to any place Anton happened to be. The encounter reinforces Anton's understanding that the boy is a card that has not yet been dealt, a trump whose future is still undetermined. The station itself serves as a neutral ground where the two characters, both pawns in the larger game between Light and Darkness, can interact without the immediate interference of the Watches. The successful body swap here allows Anton to resume his own identity and continue his investigation into the Maverick killings, while the meeting with Egor plants the seeds for the climactic confrontation on the roof of the house on stilts, where the boy's destiny becomes the central prize in Gesar's and Zabulon's final maneuver.
