Drugged smoothies

Nine Perfect Strangers

Drugged smoothies are the ordinary-looking vehicle for Tranquillum House’s most consequential deception: guests believe they are drinking part of a wellness detox, while the drinks carry undisclosed psychedelic substances. Their effects range from an unnoticed low-dose regimen that encourages guests to return to the retreat to an unauthorized, more intense session that brings visions, memories, and apparent reconciliations. The smoothies thus connect the promise of personal transformation to the ethical cost of imposing it without consent.

Concealed Ingredients and Routine Use

Masha describes micro-dosing as safe and says the doses are about one-tenth of a normal LSD dose, claiming benefits that include creativity, focus, spiritual awareness, and improved relationships. For Lars, the disclosure makes the resort’s earlier routines newly suspect. He recalls enjoying his smoothie and asking Delilah what was in it; she promised recipes for after the stay. He had imagined measurements for ingredients such as chia, not milligrams of LSD. Although he has felt good, he wonders whether the doses were too small to affect him or whether his recreational drug use has given him a tolerance, and even licks residue from the rim of his glass.

The deception had been operating for more than a year. Delilah later explains that the staff micro-dosed guests’ smoothies without their knowledge or apparent ill effects. Guests attributed feeling unusually good to organic food and meditation, then rebooked because they wanted to feel that way again. What looked like a repeatable benefit of the retreat was therefore inseparable from an undisclosed intervention.

From Micro-Dosing to an Unapproved Experiment

The revelation collides directly with the retreat’s detox promise. Frances recognizes that caffeine has been removed only for acid to take its place, while Tony objects that the staff confiscated his beer and then gave him drugs despite his never having taken them. Masha responds by comparing the relative harms of alcohol and LSD; the argument does not resolve the basic issue that the guests did not know what they were consuming.

The drinks then become the means for a dramatic escalation. Masha tells the group that most of them have consumed a final smoothie containing both LSD and liquid psilocybin, a naturally occurring substance found in certain mushrooms. She presents the experience as the next step in a planned protocol and calls the nine guests the first to receive this opportunity at Tranquillum House. The shift from concealed micro-dosing to a combined psychedelic session makes the smoothie not merely a daily supplement but the instrument of a new, unauthorized experiment.

Delilah’s account supplies the decision’s history. Masha wanted to go beyond micro-dosing and pursue something revolutionary; Yao argued that he wanted to help people, not change the course of history. Masha promised a transformation that would change lives forever. Yao’s own psychedelic session with Masha as his guide helped persuade him: afterward, Delilah saw him with a more obsessive intensity and quoting research, though she judged the decisive influence to have been the drugs and Masha herself. Delilah had anticipated that the project would end badly, yet boredom and curiosity had made her willing to watch the experiment unfold.

Altered States and Personal Meaning

The smoothie’s effects are represented through sharply different, intimate experiences rather than a single uniform response. Lars feels a sudden, radiant well-being and briefly fixes on the thought that Ray wants only his love. The insight seems to him to contain the answer to every question, until his mind breaks into an image of a billion purple petals. The scene gives the drugged drink an emotional force while leaving the experience anchored in Lars’s altered perception, not in proof that the substances have supplied objective answers.

For Frances, the session becomes a vivid, extended dream involving her deceased friend Gillian, her father, and her former husbands, full of symbols she expects to interpret. She remembers being in space and being an ant. During the experience, Yao, Delilah, and Masha repeatedly interrupt with questions and attempts to guide her; Frances ignores them because she is enjoying the visions, and senses that eventually they stop trying. On waking, she recalls the smoothie as the cause of the hallucinogenic dream and describes its clarity as unlike an ordinary dream.

The Marconi family’s experience centers on Zach, who died by suicide. Zoe says that her brother would have found it hilarious for the family to get high together. Napoleon answers him as though he is present, and experiences the scene as a return to the ordinary happiness of all four family members being together. Later, Zoe tells Frances that she had been angry at Zach and felt he had acted deliberately to make her suffer, but that during the previous night it felt as if they had talked again. She hopes they may really have seen their dead loved ones; Frances shares the sense that her encounter with Gillian and her father felt more vivid than real life. The visions offer the bereaved a powerful form for expressing longing and regret, while remaining experiences produced in the session rather than independently verified reunions.

Trust, Control, and Consequences

The smoothies’ significance lies in the contrast between what guests think they are accepting and what the staff have chosen to administer. A drink associated with nourishment, detoxification, and a carefully managed retreat becomes a concealed route for LSD, then for LSD combined with psilocybin. The guests’ varied experiences may feel illuminating, but the account of those experiences does not erase the absence of informed consent that made them possible.

That breach also reveals the limits of Masha’s transformation doctrine. Her conviction that a more forceful intervention can change lives is carried out not just through persuasive language but through control of what enters the guests’ bodies. Delilah’s disclosure that the secret dosing drove repeat bookings adds a commercial consequence to the deception: guests returned for benefits they attributed to the retreat’s visible practices, unaware of the hidden cause. By the time the more intense session begins, the smoothies have made the retreat’s promise and its violation inseparable.
