Four-Way Coordination

A Collective Body
Shared Labor
The men coordinate efforts to retrieve flotation, hold the boat, and keep one another within reach. Their communication is loud, repetitive, and essential.
The group’s athletic culture initially gives them confidence.
Fragile Balance
Their arrangement depends on every person retaining strength and judgment. Cold begins to remove those capacities one by one.
Three Against the Dark

After Marquis
Holding the Dead
Nick cradles Marquis while Will helps restrain Corey. The living must care for both an unconscious man and a deteriorating companion.
The physical burden becomes almost impossible.
Moral Choice
Nick finally lets Marquis drift away so he and Will can preserve Corey. The group’s unity survives only as a painful memory.
The Last Pair

Alone With the Sea
Will’s Death
Nick tries to keep Will attached to the boat but cannot replace his lost life jacket or failing strength. When Will disappears, Nick loses his final source of help.
The silence is more frightening than the earlier chaos.
Solitary Survival
Nick now has no one to encourage, restrain, or rescue him. Survival becomes an individual struggle against exhaustion and hallucination.
