The Education of Equality
Noughts & CrossesThis thread follows the promise of integrated schooling from political concession to Callum McGregor’s experience of exclusion and the limits of institutional reform.

A Conditional Opening

A Conditional Opening
Reform Under Pressure
The government admits a small number of Nought students to Cross schools after pressure from the Pangaean Economic Community and concern about the Liberation Militia. Kamal Hadley privately admits that he had not expected Nought applicants to pass the entrance examination.
Access Without Acceptance
Callum McGregor earns a place at Heathcroft High and hopes that education will give him choices previously denied to his family. His parents disagree about the opportunity: Ryan McGregor sees it as a path forward, while Meggie McGregor fears that Cross institutions will continue to treat Nought students as inferior.
The policy creates a formal opening without changing the assumptions that shaped the old system. Callum’s admission therefore tests whether access to a school can become genuine equality when the institution’s leaders and culture remain hostile.
An Entrance Paid in Pressure

An Entrance Paid in Pressure
Isolation After Admission
The Nought students arrive at Heathcroft High under hostile protest and are met by classmates who shove, mock, and exclude them. Teachers fail to provide consistent protection, making the students’ official admission feel precarious rather than secure.
The School’s Divided Lessons
Callum finds support in Mrs Paxton, who offers extra instruction, but Mr Jason treats his knowledge with suspicion and contempt. The school can recognize Callum’s academic ability while still subjecting him to a different standard of belonging.
His experience demonstrates that an entrance examination can select talented students without dismantling barriers inside the institution. The pressure to represent all Noughts also makes an individual pupil carry the burden of defending a group’s worth.
A Curriculum Under Challenge

A Curriculum Under Challenge
Naming the Omission
Callum McGregor answers questions about Black scientists and inventors, then observes that the examples are all Crosses. He adds that Nought figures such as Robert Peary’s colleague Matthew Henson have also shaped history, despite being left out of the dominant account.
Punishing the Questioner
Mr Jason rejects Callum’s challenge as nonsense and orders him to wait outside the headmaster’s office. Callum hears the headmaster, Mr Corsa, dismiss concerns about the Nought students and realizes that the exclusion he experiences has institutional defenders.
The episode links classroom knowledge to political power: whoever controls the curriculum can make one group’s achievements seem universal and another’s invisible. Callum’s protest is intellectually grounded, but his punishment illustrates how schools can treat evidence as insubordination when it threatens their self-image.
Promised Futures Withdrawn

Promised Futures Withdrawn
Education Made Conditional
After Ryan McGregor is accused in the Dundale bombing, Heathcroft suspends Callum McGregor before his father’s case is resolved. The headmaster presents the decision as serving everyone’s interests, but its timing makes Callum answerable for a charge against someone else.
The Pattern of Exclusion
Callum points to the different treatment of Nought pupils: Colin has left, Shania has been expelled, and Cross students escape equivalent punishment. His education, once held out as proof that the system was opening, now appears dependent on his family’s political acceptability.
The suspension exposes reform as reversible when the institution feels threatened. Callum’s lost place at school narrows his future and feeds his sense that peaceful participation offers no reliable route to equal standing.
A Door Closed for Good

A Door Closed for Good
The End of the School Route
Callum McGregor leaves Heathcroft convinced that the school has already decided he does not belong. Although he once imagined university and a career beyond the limits imposed on Noughts, each institutional setback makes that future harder to picture.
The Meaning of Exclusion
His departure is not presented as proof that education has no value; Callum remains intellectually curious and aware of what learning could offer. Instead, the school’s treatment makes access appear to be a concession that can be withdrawn whenever a Nought becomes inconvenient.
The arc turns one pupil’s school experience into a critique of reform without protection. When institutions invite marginalized students in but fail to defend their equality once conflict arises, the invitation risks becoming a symbol of progress rather than its substance.
