Kidnapping ransom note and instructions
Noughts & CrossesThe kidnapping ransom note and instructions are the operational link between Sephy’s abduction and the Liberation Militia’s political and financial demands. They are not presented merely as a message asking for money: the plan couples ransom with the release of five prisoners, conceals the kidnappers’ communications through a telephone relay, and assigns Callum a role in delivering instructions and collecting the payment.
Purpose and Demands
Jude describes the first step as delivering a ransom note, accompanied by proof that the group has Sephy, to her father, Kamal Hadley. The evidence of possession is intended to make the threat concrete and establish that the demands come from those holding his daughter.
The money is meant to fund future Liberation Militia activity. Payment alone will not secure Sephy’s return: the kidnappers also demand that five members of the organization be released from prison before Kamal can see her again. The authorities believe the requested prisoners are underlings, but three are in fact key members. The demand therefore works on two levels, seeking both resources and the return of strategically important members.
Communications and Roles
The ransom operation depends on separating its communications across several people and locations. Andrew asks whether the telephone relay is ready; Jude says the group has rehearsed it repeatedly. Leila is to remain at the cabin with Sephy, while Jude, Pete, and Morgan make relay calls from three different places around town to prevent the calls from being traced.
Callum has a distinct task: he is to drop off a second set of instructions, collect the money, and return directly to the cabin. Jude insists that each participant will be in the proper place at the proper time, presenting the scheme as planned rather than improvised. The division of work reflects the group’s security concerns as well as the political stakes attached to the ransom.
Preparation and Stakes
The plan follows more than two weeks of preparation after information reached the group that Sephy might be on her way home. Jude and Pete had been plotting for this opportunity and obtained permission from the General. The cabin was known only to a select few on a need-to-know basis, and the group arranged for two guards to remain on duty at all times, one outside the front and one at the back. Its position in a woodland clearing left anyone approaching without cover before reaching it.
The ransom instructions thus belong to a wider structure of secrecy, command, and coordinated action. They make Sephy’s captivity a means of pressuring Kamal, while the concealed relay, the planned movements, and the release demand connect a personal hostage crisis to the Liberation Militia’s future operations and imprisoned leadership.
