Bricktown Alley Werewolf Encounter
Of Fates & Fables (The Complete Series)The Bricktown Alley Werewolf Encounter is the night Romy first sees a werewolf and learns that the creatures are real. What begins as an uneasy walk away from a crowded bar becomes a witness to a killing—and the moment ordinary explanations fall apart.
Setting and First Signs
Valkyrie stands in Bricktown, an area of Reverence where the streets are paved with uneven bricks. After leaving the crowded bar, Romy welcomes the cool autumn air, but the narrow street and its cracked paving make walking in her impractical heels difficult. The bar sits at the far end of a side street; at this hour, the alley beside it is deserted, its darkness beginning just beyond the reach of a streetlight.
A raised male voice draws Romy’s attention. She initially suspects a drunken fight, then moves closer to find out what is happening. Her gold heel catches between the bricks. As she bends to free it, a low growl sounds nearby, and the heel snaps. The broken shoe turns from a nuisance into the first improvised element of her defense: she puts it in her bag and keeps the intact one within reach as a possible weapon.
Romy searches her purse for mace, only to remember that she left it at home to make room for books. Instead, she takes out her phone, switches on its flashlight, and holds her thumb near the emergency-call button. She is wary of rushing blindly into the alley, but the narrow beam offers only a limited view. The scene’s suspense rests on that gap between what she can hear and what she can see: the growl has a distinctly feral quality, while the darkness keeps its source concealed.
The Killing and the Impossible Change
The light from Romy’s phone resolves the shapes at the end of the alley: two enormous dogs, one brown and pinned to the ground beneath a massive black one, whose jaws are clamped around its victim’s neck. The sight clears the alcohol haze from her mind. Panicking, she throws her remaining shoe at the black animal. The gesture does not stop what is happening; it only draws its attention, leaving her without the makeshift weapon she had kept in hand.
When Romy looks again at the fallen brown dog, she sees that it is a dead man. His naked body lies still, blood continuing to stream from the torn throat. The shock makes her phone slip from her hands and clatter onto the bricks. She runs, looking back only after reaching the street, where she stops abruptly and spills some of her belongings as her bag slides down her arm.
The black dog has vanished. In its place stands a naked man, covered in blood, with the corpse still behind him in the alley. He starts toward Romy, then suddenly stiffens and stops. The violence in his expression gives way to an intensity she feels physically, followed by confusion; he opens his mouth as if to speak, then closes it without saying anything. The shift leaves Romy facing not an animal and a man, but a single impossible sequence: two dogs, then two men, one dead.
She identifies the creatures as shifters and understands that werewolves are real, though the surviving man appears ready to attack her. Rather than wait to discover his intentions, Romy turns and runs. The encounter ends not with an explanation or rescue, but with flight: the hidden threat has become visible, and the world she thought she understood can no longer contain what she has witnessed.
What the Encounter Makes Possible
The alley gives Romy proof before it gives her an explanation. Much later, when Kash refers matter-of-factly to a man having been spelled, she challenges him for treating magic as ordinary knowledge she should already possess. Her bewilderment makes clear that witnessing the impossible did not immediately equip her to understand the supernatural rules behind it. The encounter opens a gap between what she has seen and what others around her know; subsequent revelations about magic, werewolf law, and pack punishment begin to fill it.
That gap also has a public counterpart. At Hallowed Grounds, Romy sees the Girl Who Cried Werewolf hashtag trending, complete with spoof accounts and memes, while her follower count falls. Her private certainty that werewolves exist therefore stands against a culture ready to turn the claim into a joke. When she is later held captive, Brody exploits that disbelief, arguing that the public will dismiss her as the girl who cried captive because she has already disappeared once. The initial encounter thus marks the beginning of a conflict over credibility as well as survival: seeing the truth does not ensure that anyone else will believe it.
Romy’s later place among the pack sharply contrasts with her first response to the supernatural world. Before the coming battle, she tells the gathered pack that the fight is theirs to win, and its members cheer her. The woman who once ran from an inexplicable threat has become someone who speaks publicly about danger and helps mobilize others against it. The alley encounter remains decisive not because it resolves the mystery, but because it begins a progression from frightened witness to an active participant in the world she has discovered.
The Social Order Behind the Sight
The encounter reveals bodies changing shape, but not the rules governing the people who can change them. Romy later learns that werewolves answer to rules beyond human law, with cells in Kash’s private residence for pack members who break them. That knowledge reframes the alley’s violence: what first appeared to be an isolated, incomprehensible attack belongs to a society with its own systems of authority and punishment.
The territorial order is not simply inherited or uncontested. Under the Old Law, a true pack is defined by werewolves born to the species rather than bitten into it; the largest true pack in an area may rule its territory, and a rival pack with sufficient numbers can challenge that claim. Kash’s family originally gained its land through that system, while a victorious challenger could take it. These rules do not explain what Romy saw in the alley, but they reveal how far its implications reach: discovering werewolves means encountering not only a hidden species, but a contested political world whose laws help shape the danger she has stumbled into.
