Derek's Final Attack and Death After Exile

Of Fates & Fables (The Complete Series)

Derek's Final Attack and Death After Exile is the final confrontation between Derek and Romy’s group: an encounter that turns an isolated patrol into a lethal fight, confirms Derek has been cast out by Brody, and ends with Romy staying beside him until he dies. Though Derek is alone, his attack shows that even an exiled enemy remains dangerous—and his last refusal to divulge Brody’s secrets preserves the threat beyond his own death.

The Encounter

While moving through the brush in wolf form, Romy follows a scent around a hillside and finds Derek. His injured eye has healed into a permanent scar that leaves the lid partly closed, with the eye itself clouded yellow. The sight shocks Romy and Talia, who had not expected to find another werewolf there. Kash wonders whether Brody has cut Derek loose, but treats the possibility of a trap seriously: he sends Talia and Lynch to check the perimeter while he stays with Romy and Derek.

The Fight and Derek’s Death

Derek makes the first move, charging straight at Romy, but Kash intercepts him and drives him farther into the trees with teeth and claws. Kash cuts into Derek’s fur, leaving bloody claw marks along his middle. When Derek suddenly breaks away and leaps at Romy, he knocks her to the ground and snaps his teeth near her head. She grips the scruff of his fur with both hands to hold him back.

Romy discovers how to use her command against him: she must touch him. Grabbing Derek’s shoulder, she orders him to stop, and he freezes, struggling against the spell. Kash then slams a wooden branch into Derek’s chest. Blood leaks from the wound as Derek collapses; the branch remains lodged in him, and blood runs from his mouth. The fight shifts from immediate danger to a final interrogation, with Romy and Kash standing over the injured wolf as Talia and Lynch return from their perimeter check.

Kash identifies Derek as banished. Derek confirms that Brody does not tolerate failure, but cannot offer information about where Brody has gone. Romy also asks for Regina’s whereabouts. Derek says he does not know and adds that Regina has spelled him to keep silent. His answer makes clear that, even after Brody has cast him out, the alliance’s secrets are still protected by magical control. Derek taunts Romy that Brody remains more powerful than she is, even in her new state.

Romy refuses to leave while Derek is dying. She stays until his breathing stops, needing to witness the end herself before she can believe the danger he represents is over. His death settles the immediate confrontation, but her final thought counts him as only one of Brody’s werebros: the enemy’s ranks remain, and the wider conflict is not finished.

The History Behind the Last Encounter

The fight closes a conflict that had already left its mark on both opponents. Romy recognizes Derek despite his wolf form partly because the eye she injured has healed into a lasting scar, now clouded and unable to open fully. The damage makes their history visible in the clearing: this is not a chance encounter between strangers, but a return of the man who had helped hold Romy under Brody’s control.

That earlier captivity also gives Derek’s last attack its wider stakes. When Brody threatened to have Justice turn Romy and force her into repeated pregnancies, Derek and the others showed no surprise; they appeared relieved that Justice had volunteered instead of them. Derek’s presence in that plan ties his personal violence to Brody’s effort to build a pack through coercion. His death ends his ability to carry out that threat, but his refusal—or inability—to give Romy useful information leaves Brody’s wider operation unresolved.

A Death That Does Not End the War

Derek’s death removes one attacker, not the machinery that made him dangerous. By the time Romy and Kash confront him, Brody has banished him for failure, and Derek is alone; yet his silence about Brody and Regina shows how the network’s secrets remain guarded even after its members are discarded. The scene’s narrow victory sits against a larger failure of protection: when the Council proposes interviewing the captive women before acting, Romy objects that this would force survivors to relive what Brody did, and later tells the pack that the Council is leaving the fight to them. Derek’s final attack therefore belongs to a conflict in which waiting for formal intervention has not made the threat disappear.

The later battle confirms the limits of killing a single subordinate. Romy cuts Brody’s Delta tattoo to drain its magic, weakening the compulsion holding his wolves, but the effect is not enough to free them completely; she and Kash must continue fighting Brody himself. When they finally bring him down, Derek’s death reads as an early, local end to violence whose coercive structure survives him. His last taunt that Brody is still more powerful than Romy is disproved in the larger conflict, but not by Derek’s death alone: the decisive change comes through collective resistance to the control Brody imposed.
