Justice blocks the fatal blade with Romy

Of Fates & Fables (The Complete Series)

Justice saves Romy by stepping into the path of Brody’s blade during the battle, taking a blow meant for her. The moment makes his loyalty unmistakable and leaves Romy facing the loss of a close friend as the fight continues.

The Attack and Intervention

Brody calls for Regina as the tattoo on his arm glows and releases a blade. While he reaches for the weapon, Zac appears beside Romy in wolf form, pins her left arm with his claws, and leaves her unable to get out of the blade’s path. Brody raises the weapon to strike. Zac’s weight suddenly lifts, but too late for Romy to move: Brody brings the blade down, and a body lands across her instead. Looking up, Romy recognizes Justice. Bruised and battered, he manages a defiant final reply to Brody before going still. Romy understands that he has taken the killing blow meant for her.

The Sacrifice’s Aftermath

Justice’s intervention does not end the battle: Romy has to absorb the shock of seeing her friend take a fatal blow while Brody remains armed and the fighting continues. The loss sharpens her resolve into action. She compels Brody to hand over a knife, then cuts through the Delta tattoo on his arm, explicitly dedicating the act to Justice. Murky green magic drains from the wound, weakening Brody’s hold on the wolves without immediately freeing them. Romy keeps fighting, later joining Kash in killing Brody. Justice’s sacrifice thus becomes more than a rescue: it changes the personal stakes of the battle and gives Romy’s counterattack a direct connection to the friend who died protecting her.

A Complicated Alliance

Before the battle, Justice and Romy’s bond is marked by the danger of his position in Brody’s pack. When he enters with food after Romy has been hurt, he rushes to cup her face and asks what happened; she pushes his hands away and turns her back, feeling betrayed even as she knows he did not directly cause her pain. His later care is more careful: when helping her change, he stops at her refusal and offers to bring Talia or Anna instead. Romy explains that she cannot lift her arms, and Justice’s visible relief answers the fear behind his unfinished question. These earlier moments give their friendship its particular weight: trust has to form alongside the harm Brody’s rule has brought into their lives, and Justice’s final choice emerges from a relationship already shaped by both suspicion and concern.

Defiance at the Turning Point

Justice’s final intervention reverses the scene’s immediate balance of power without stopping its violence. Brody has turned a glowing tattoo into a blade, while Zac’s claws hold Romy in its path; Justice answers that trap not with a counterattack but by placing his body between the weapon and its intended victim. His last defiant words are directed at Brody, making the rescue an act of resistance as well as protection. The blade still falls, and Justice dies, so the moment offers no clean victory: it gives Romy a chance to survive while making the cost of Brody’s rule physically undeniable. The sacrifice marks the point where Justice’s opposition becomes irreversible, and where Romy’s struggle against Brody is bound to the loss of the friend who chose to shield her.
