Romy Cartelli and Derek

Of Fates & Fables (The Complete Series)

Romy Cartelli and Derek are enemies whose conflict moves from Derek’s attempt to transform Romy to repeated confrontations in which she resists him and ultimately helps bring his attack to an end. Their hostility is marked by a reversal: after Derek injures and pursues her, Romy leaves him with a lasting eye injury and later discovers that she can stop him with a command.

The Conflict Takes Shape

Derek’s threat to Romy is personal as well as part of the danger posed by Brody’s pack. During her captivity, Brody threatens to transform her, and Derek’s later attack makes that threat immediate: his teeth scrape her neck. When Birdie checks the mark, Romy has to expose the place where Derek bit her. The encounter establishes the physical stakes between them, while Romy’s later confrontation with Derek recalls that he nearly killed her before Brody attempted to do so.

The Escape and Its Aftermath

During the escape from Brody’s clinic, Romy’s confrontation with Derek turns an attempted rescue into a direct contest. As she moves to leave, she retrieves her baton near the unconscious Derek; he attacks before she can get away. Romy holds on to the weapon and uses it to stop him, and Kash pulls her clear. Even while being carried from the building, her attention turns to the captive women still inside, underscoring that her resistance is bound to the rescue rather than to revenge alone.

Derek survives and later returns to the conflict with a lasting consequence of that encounter: the eye Romy injured has partly healed, but a scar prevents him from opening it fully, and its clouded appearance remains. When Romy recognizes him in wolf form, the old danger becomes immediate again. The damaged eye acts as a visible record of their earlier struggle, while Derek’s renewed pursuit shows that neither the injury nor their separation has ended their hostility.

The Final Confrontation

When Derek returns, Talia and Lynch leave Kash and Romy to face him. The conflict turns again toward Romy: Derek focuses on her, and during the struggle he knocks Kash aside and attacks her. Romy cannot stop him with a command from a distance. Remembering how her ability works, she grabs Derek’s shoulder and orders him to stop; contact makes the command take effect, freezing him long enough for Kash to intervene.

As Derek lies dying, Romy uses the brief opening to ask where Brody and Regina are, but Derek does not answer. She remains beside him until his final breath, unwilling to leave before she knows he is dead. The encounter closes their conflict not with reconciliation but with Romy’s newly discovered power and her insistence on witnessing its consequence: the attacker who once pursued her can no longer threaten her.

The Conflict as a Test of Romy’s Power

Derek’s final encounter also makes Romy’s newly discovered ability legible to the people around her. After she uses it against him, Derek asks how she did it, and Talia asks what she has done; Romy identifies the effect as mind control. The questions turn a private, instinctive act of defense into a recognized power, while Derek’s evident hatred shows that his defeat has not softened their antagonism. Their conflict therefore ends with more than a change in who can physically threaten whom: Derek becomes the first opponent through whom Romy’s unexplained capacity is named aloud to her allies.
