The Raid on Regina’s Safe House

Of Fates & Fables (The Complete Series)

The Raid on Regina’s Safe House is the assault on a remote house where Brody and Regina have concealed themselves behind magic. Romy and Kash’s group arrives expecting danger and finds an empty-looking home, but the wards, a spell drawn on the floor, and the sudden appearance of the two conspirators transform a rescue operation into a personal confrontation. The raid brings the hidden violence of Brody’s campaign into the open and begins the final armed struggle against him and Regina.

Background and Stakes

The raid follows the discovery that Brody has been turning abducted campus women into werewolves and forcing them into pregnancies. Romy explains the scheme to Danielle, who responds with horror; later, rescued women emerge from a room frightened and heavily pregnant, their short hair and matching neck tattoos marking the abuse Brody has imposed on them. The danger extends even to their children: Romy sees Brody’s dark mark on a baby’s arm and realizes that he has already claimed the infant. These details make the search for the remaining captives more than a contest over territory. It is an attempt to reach people whose bodies and family ties have been made part of Brody’s power.

Missy’s testimony helps direct the search. When Romy and Talia infer that an emptied room means Brody has moved the women elsewhere, they ask Missy whether he might have another home or remote hiding place. Her hesitation points toward information she has not yet disclosed. The raid therefore grows out of an accumulating investigation: the women’s disappearance, the marks on their bodies and children, and the possibility that Brody has hidden his operation beyond the places the group has already searched.

After Birdie agrees to join the operation, the group moves quickly. Romy travels with Talia and Anna in one car, behind which are three more cars filled with pack members Kash has assigned to the mission. Lynch drives them to the address James provided. A Google Earth search has revealed a small, single-story house in a run-down neighborhood on the edge of town, near a retired train station. Its remoteness and unremarkable appearance make it a plausible hiding place: neighbors are less likely to question activity or notice werewolves moving around.

The Approach and the Wards

The raiders stop before crossing the property line because Birdie has warned them not to enter the yard until she tests it for magical traps. They have already abandoned the possibility of surprise; once Birdie interferes with the magic, the people inside will know they are coming. Instead, the group chooses to approach openly, relying on confidence and intimidation rather than concealment. This pause at the boundary makes the house’s defenses part of the encounter from the outset: entry is not simply a matter of force, but of identifying and disabling the magic protecting the property.

A crash and scream come from inside. Birdie then announces that the wards are down. Kash tells Romy to stay close, releases her hand, and shifts into wolf form; Lynch shifts as well. Romy grips the blade Talia has given her and runs toward the entrance with the others. Half a dozen wolves appear around the side of the house. As they reach the building, the front door bursts open and strikes the wall hard enough to crack its hinges. The first wolves surge inside, turning the breach into a fast, coordinated entry.

An Empty House, Then a Revelation

The first sweep finds no one. Romy waits near the doorway while the wolves search from room to room, and they return without having located a person. But the living room carries traces of recent occupation: smoke still curls from burning sage in a dish, and two distinct impressions remain in the sagging couch. A large, uneven circle with lines through it has been drawn on the floor in what appears to be eyeliner. The house is not simply abandoned; its small signs suggest that someone has been there moments before.

Birdie works on the marked circle, making slashing motions with her hands as she investigates the spell. Xan arrives breathless, recognizing that the magic is not hiding an object but a person. A crackle of air and a loud snap reveal two figures who had been concealed inside the circle. Brody stands less than three feet from Romy; beside him is Regina, the tattooed brunette. The raid’s apparent failure to find anyone is reversed in an instant: the empty house has been a magical concealment, and the search party has entered the space where its enemies were waiting.

Romy focuses on Brody rather than Regina. His crooked smile and apparent readiness make clear that he is prepared for the encounter. For Romy, the sight of him gathers the harms already associated with his campaign: the women he stole and forced into werewolf life, and people such as Justice whom he used in carrying it out. She crouches, ready to attack with her knife, but Brody is better prepared for their meeting than she is. The raid has exposed him, yet exposure alone does not give Romy the advantage.

Consequences and Significance

The safe-house confrontation belongs to a wider effort to rescue Brody’s captives and challenge the authority he has built through coercion. Romy later confronts the council over its response, objecting that officials who delay to interview the women risk making them relive their abuse while leaving them unprotected. At a pack gathering, she likewise rejects the hope that politicians will resolve the danger for them and tells the group that the fight is theirs to win. Those moments clarify what the raid represents: the group’s intervention is not only an attempt to locate Brody, but a response to the failure of institutions to act quickly enough for the people he has harmed.

The raid itself does not end the conflict. In the later battle against Brody’s forces, Romy cuts through his Delta tattoo, releasing murky green magic and weakening the control he holds over the wolves. Birdie strikes Regina with a magical bolt, and Kash pins Brody after biting his exposed throat. Romy then takes the dropped knife and plunges it into Brody’s open throat. That later victory gives the raid’s discovery its larger consequence: the hidden partnership between Brody and Regina is no longer merely a rumor or an empty address on a map, but a confrontation that leads into the struggle that breaks their hold over the pack.
