Somerville Pack Battle
Of Fates & Fables (The Complete Series)The attack on the Somerville pack compound is the point at which Brody Harrison’s campaign of coercion becomes an open territorial war. Brody and Regina bring an armed force through portals into the pack’s clearing, confronting Romy, Kash, and their allies with the violence they had been preparing to resist.
Causes and Stakes
The battle grows out of Brody’s effort to take Kash’s lands by building a pack of born werewolves. His plan depends on abducting women, forcibly turning them, and making them pregnant. Romy learns the human cost directly: the rescued women are heavily pregnant and carry tattoos matching Brody’s, while one infant has already been marked with his symbol. Kaitlyn insists that, although she loves her baby, neither her pregnancy nor the violence behind it was her choice; the perpetrators must still answer for what they did. The forced-breeding scheme is therefore both a means of territorial expansion and a campaign of violence against captive women and their children.
The council’s delay sharpens the stakes. When its members propose interviewing the women and corroborating their accounts before acting, Romy objects that this would make survivors relive their trauma after Brody had already kidnapped and assaulted them. Later, she tells the Somerville pack that the council is made up of politicians hoping the pack will handle the crisis without them. She urges the pack to prepare for Brody’s attack, declaring that the fight is theirs to win. The ensuing assault tests that resolve: the pack must defend its territory and confront Brody’s control over the people he has turned.
The Assault Through the Portals
The assault begins with a warning from Birdie. Pale and struggling to speak, she tells the gathered pack to get ready and starts to mention the wards, but a popping noise and a gale-force wind cut her off. A portal opens in the middle of the field, its green-lit interior swirling like a painted canvas. Kash recognizes the man who emerges as Logan and moves toward him; Romy stops him with a hand, sensing danger. Logan’s attempt to speak ends in a gurgle, and his lifeless body tumbles from the portal. Brody steps out after him, leaving Logan’s body where it fell.
Kash’s growl and trembling body show how close he is to losing control, while Romy feels her own body respond to the threat. Brody holds his position before the open portal and taunts the pack with the tactical advantage it gives him: they cannot reach him before he escapes back through it. His confidence is not based on the portal alone. A crazed cackle draws Romy’s attention to Regina, the witch she had seen at the coffee shop. Regina stands within the green opening, chanting as the tattoos on her skin seem to writhe beneath the ink.
More portals appear across the clearing, disgorging yellow-eyed werebros who encircle and divide the defenders. Brody orders an attack, and his newly turned wolves rush to obey. The fighting breaks into separate clashes around the field. Kash is drawn into a fight against two wolves, positioning himself to shield Romy as he defends against them; the battle makes his protection of her a physical choice even as Brody’s forces threaten the pack on every side.
Birdie answers the invasion with a war cry and gets to her feet, though she is barely able to stand. Regina closes the main portal with a flick of her wrist, and the other portals vanish in turn. Their disappearance seems to restore some of Birdie’s strength: she advances to confront Regina. The battle’s shifting balance is immediately marked by Justice’s cry of pain and an enraged howl in the distance. Romy finds Justice hunched on the ground with a fresh wound opening across his back, while Regina licks blood from her long nails.
Breaking the Compulsion and Counterattacking
Romy turns the battle toward Brody’s hold over his own fighters by using his Delta tattoo as the target. She takes Brody’s knife and cuts through the mark, which bleeds not only blood but murky green magic. The wolves behind her howl. They continue fighting, yet their resistance to Brody’s Alpha compulsion becomes visible: damaging the tattoo weakens his control without immediately releasing them from it. Brody curses and tries to wrench himself away, while Romy recognizes that breaking the mark has not finished the work.
Birdie’s counterattack reaches Regina. Calling out, “Yahtzee,” she fires another sparkling bolt, this one striking Regina in the chest and dropping her to the ground. Brody yelps, but his reaction is cut short when Kash’s teeth close around his exposed throat. Romy joins Kash, retrieves the knife Brody dropped, moves his paw aside, and drives the blade into the already-open wound. Blood gushes as Brody twists in Kash’s grip; Romy can only hope she has struck something vital. The counterattack links the battle’s two fronts: Birdie brings down the witch sustaining the invasion, while Romy and Kash turn Brody’s own exposed body into the means of confronting his command.
Tactical Reversal and Unresolved Outcome
The portals turn the battle into more than a clash of bodies: they let Brody’s fighters arrive inside the defenders’ territory, divide the clearing, and threaten to withdraw before the pack can reach him. Once Regina closes the main portal and the others disappear, that advantage collapses. Birdie’s strength appears to return as the openings vanish, and she can confront the witch directly. The abrupt change exposes how closely the attack depends on magical access as well as Brody’s command over his newly turned wolves.
Romy’s assault on Brody’s tattoo is a separate attempt to break that command from within. The green substance seeping from the cut makes the magic visible, and the wolves’ howls register a change: they begin resisting the Alpha compulsion, though they are not yet free of it. Romy therefore has to act again rather than mistake a partial weakening for a release. When Birdie brings Regina down, Kash seizes Brody by the throat; Romy retrieves the dropped knife and strikes into the wound. Her intervention is not merely a declaration of allegiance to the defenders. It is a direct effort to stop the violence and loosen the hold keeping Brody’s wolves under his control.
The available scene ends on an attempted killing, not a confirmed outcome. Brody is pinned by Kash and bleeding from the throat, but Romy can only hope that her blow has reached something vital. The battle’s immediate result remains unsettled: Regina has fallen, the portals have closed, and Brody’s control has weakened, yet the attackers’ submission and the captives’ complete safety have not been established here. That suspended ending preserves the scene’s central tension between a tactical reversal and the still-undecided struggle for the pack’s freedom.
