Arraioz

Ofrenda a la tormenta

Arraioz is one of the towns included in the investigation’s map of infant deaths associated with the Baztán River. Its importance is geographic: plotted among other river localities, it helps show the reach of a suspected pattern, though the evidence does not identify a particular death or investigation scene in the town.

Place in the River Map

As Amaia Salazar reconstructed the distribution of cases, she marked victim localities and traced a line from Erratzu through Elbete and Elizondo toward Arraioz, continuing to Oieregi in connection with Haizea’s case. The plotted places brought the river’s course into view as a possible organizing feature of the deaths. Arraioz therefore belongs to the sequence that made the geographic pattern legible, rather than being singled out as its origin or conclusion.

Role in the Investigation

The map was part of a broader effort to compare deaths across towns along the river and toward the boundary with Guipúzcoa. Further inquiries expanded the plotted cases, and the route was described as following the river from its source to its mouth, where it takes the name Bidasoa. Arraioz’s place in this investigation is consequently that of one point in a regional distribution; proximity to the river contributed to the pattern under examination but did not, by itself, establish a connection between cases.

Narrative Significance

Arraioz helps give the investigation’s geographic reasoning a concrete scale. Rather than treating each suspicious infant death as an isolated occurrence, Amaia’s map sets localities into relation along a watercourse and across administrative boundaries. The town’s significance remains within that spatial hypothesis: it helps define the mapped reach of the inquiry, while the evidence presented does not attribute a separate event or suspect to Arraioz itself.
