Lincoln Tunnel
On the RoadThe Lincoln Tunnel is a recurring passage between New York and the open road, its significance shaped less by description of the structure itself than by the journeys it carries. Sal Paradise first imagines crossing it on foot because he has no money for a bus; later, Dean Moriarty drives through it with Sal and Marylou as they enter New York at daybreak. In both scenes, the tunnel marks a threshold between the road’s uncertain expanse and the city that waits at its end.
The First Return to New York
Sal’s first westward journey ends in exhaustion and near-starvation. After eight thousand miles around the American continent, he reaches Times Square without the fare to get home to Paterson. He imagines walking the last miles through the Lincoln Tunnel or over the Washington Bridge, a measure of how completely travel has depleted him. Instead, he begs a quarter from a Greek minister and takes the bus. The tunnel belongs here to a desperate calculation: New York is close, but even the final passage home is beyond his means.
A Threshold on the Road
On a later journey, the tunnel is no longer an imagined route on foot but part of a fast-moving entrance into the city. After driving through New Jersey, Dean, Sal, and Marylou pass through the Lincoln Tunnel in the snowy dawn. Dean has wrapped a sweater around his ears and describes the travelers as a band of Arabs coming to blow up New York; Marylou wants to see Times Square, and the party heads there. The passage links the highway’s forward rush to the familiar urban center, where Dean immediately looks for Hassel.
Recurrence and Meaning
These contrasting crossings give the tunnel a compact narrative force. For Sal, it figures the distance still separating a weary traveler from home; for Dean and his companions, it is a route into another episode, traversed at speed and followed by a renewed search for people and excitement. The tunnel does not end the movement of the novel: it carries the travelers into the city, where the road’s unsettled life resumes in a different setting.
