Setting

The scene takes place on Greenbriar Lane, a cul-de-sac in an affluent section of Pasadena, at 2:20 a.m. on February 7, 1969. The street is lined with suburban houses and manicured lawns; inside, the residents are described as upper-middle-class white people, apparently asleep behind locked doors with air conditioners running. The neighborhood seems motionless, apart from the possibility of a stray cat or a coyote coming down from the hills to forage in trash cans.

The Kreepy Krawl

Outside a dark house whose mailbox identifies it as the Hirshbergs’ home, five members of the Family gather: Clem, Sadie, Froggy, one of its youngest members, Debra Jo, and Charles Manson. Debra Jo approaches the house with her knees visibly shaking. She crosses the dew-covered lawn barefoot, then follows the concrete path toward a wooden backyard gate, leaving wet footprints behind her.

At the gate, she reaches over and lifts a rusty hinge on the other side so she can open the door quietly. As she slips into the yard, the companions watching from the sidewalk gradually disappear from view. She is left alone on the Hirshbergs’ property.

The Backyard and Its Significance

The backyard is orderly and domestic: it has a kidney-shaped pool, green grass, a large tree, picnic tables, and children’s Big Wheels. The well-kept setting extends the neighborhood’s appearance of comfort and security, while the Big Wheels offer a glimpse of family life within the otherwise dark, silent property. Pasadena’s role in the scene rests on this contrast: the Kreepy Krawl carries the Family from the public sidewalk into a private home’s carefully maintained space, and leaves Debra Jo isolated there.
