Morton Manor Park
One DayMorton Manor Park is a lavish wedding compound in Somerset whose maze, formal gardens, and theatrical architecture turn Tilly Killick’s wedding into the setting for Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew’s private, increasingly disorienting encounter. The estate’s expensive, enclosed design contrasts with the awkward intimacy of their conversation, while its maze gives that encounter a literal setting of uncertainty.
Estate and Design
Shrewd investors have transformed the vast estate into a weekend wedding destination, with a chapel, banqueting hall, spa, guest bedrooms with walk-through showers, and a privet maze. A high wall topped with razor wire encloses the grounds. Follies, grottoes, ha-has, gazebos, a castle, and even a bouncy castle make the venue feel like an elaborate marital amusement park, available to couples at breathtaking expense.
The estate’s scale and extravagance unsettle Emma when she arrives late and exhausted at its security gates. The setting seems particularly incongruous for the wedding of Tilly Killick, a former member of the Socialist Workers’ Party. As Emma drives along the sweeping gravel entrance, she is bemused and disconcerted by the property’s transformation of a wedding into an all-encompassing commercial spectacle.
Arrival at the Wedding
Near the chapel, a man in a powdered wig and frock coat, dressed as a footman, lunges in front of Emma’s car and waves her down. The staged formality of the encounter adds to the estate’s theatrical atmosphere; Emma asks whether there is a problem, while privately wanting to call him an officer. The moment makes the grounds feel less like an ordinary country house than a carefully managed performance.
The Maze at Night
Later, Emma and Dexter take two glasses out of the marquee and walk arm in arm through the rose garden toward the maze. The air is still warm, and bats swoop overhead. Their conversation turns to Tilly Killick and the prospect of her marrying another man: Emma asks Dexter how it feels to lose an old flame, and he rejects that description of Tilly.
Inside the maze, Emma looks in both directions and admits that they should have left a trail of breadcrumbs. The lights then click off one by one, plunging the pair into darkness. They stand still as their eyes adjust and listen to the band playing It’s Raining Men, trying to treat its muffled sound as a clue to their location. Emma urges them to get back before the song’s joke becomes literal. The maze’s sudden blackout turns the estate’s decorative attraction into a brief practical predicament, while echoing the uncertainty of Emma and Dexter’s conversation.
