Absent links

Other People

Absent links names the incompleteness at the heart of Mary Lamb’s idea of love: people may try to form a circle of mutual protection, but breaks remain in the chain. The image becomes painfully immediate when Mary resolves to offer Alan her support and then finds him hanging in his room.

The Circle of Love

As Mary starts to feel better about Alan, she imagines love as a circle formed by people joining arms around one another. The circle is not seamless: it is often broken, yet continually tries to become complete. Mary sees herself as one of those who will stand on the line to protect Alan, and hopes he will likewise stand there to protect her.

Her thought holds care and limitation together. The wish is reciprocal, but Mary recognizes that the circle will always be imperfect, with broken chains, absent links, and many hands with no hands to hold. The image does not promise that love can repair every separation; it gives shape to the effort to remain connected despite them.

The Unanswered Appeal

Mary decides to go straight to Alan’s room and tell him what she has concluded, hoping he will agree. She enters without knocking, but the room is silent and empty in the dusk. Papers lie on the table by the window; then she sees a figure facing the wall and approaches, still assuming it might be Alan standing on something.

The figure is Alan, but he does not turn as people ordinarily do: the cord of his dressing gown is around his neck. The discovery interrupts Mary’s intended exchange before her hoped-for promise of mutual protection can be spoken. Her image of the circle thus meets an immediate, irreversible absence.

Significance

The expression joins an ideal of solidarity to an awareness of its failure. Mary’s imagined circle depends on people being present to hold one another, while its absent links mark the points where that support cannot be secured. The scene gives the metaphor a stark narrative consequence: just as Mary resolves to offer Alan a place within her circle of care, she finds him dead and cannot reach him.
