Dom's keepsake box

Our Chemical Hearts

Dom's keepsake box is a small metal container holding objects from Dom’s shrine, and the final item Grace Town releases into the Abandoned train station underground pool. Its descent gives physical form to her act of letting go, while leaving unresolved whether she has forgiven herself or can move on.

Appearance and Contents

The box is described as small and metal. It sits on the steps beside the pool, holding an assortment of objects associated with Dom’s shrine: an anchor necklace Grace Town wore on the first day the narrator saw her, a keychain bearing the name of The Strokes, and Dom's Ramones T-shirt, which she had been unable to wash. The contents are not interchangeable keepsakes: they connect the shrine to Grace Town’s own past and to the material traces of Dom.

Release at the Pool

After Grace Town speaks about death as a release from pain and exhaustion, the narrator urges her to go home. She does not object. Instead, she takes the narrator’s hand and leads him into the water, where she releases the keepsakes one by one. The box itself is last. Scratched into its side is “DOM GRADE 10”; it sinks among a flurry of fish and comes to rest on the debris-strewn floor at their feet.

Significance

The box changes from a container that gathers and preserves objects associated with Dom into the final object Grace Town relinquishes. Because she releases it only after the individual keepsakes, its sinking closes the sequence materially: even the vessel that held the shrine is given up. The scene suggests a movement toward release, but not a settled resolution. The narrator wonders whether Grace Town has forgiven herself and whether she can move on; her response that stories with happy endings have not necessarily finished keeps the meaning of the gesture open.
