Justin

Our Chemical Hearts

Justin, known to Henry as Dad, is Henry's father and a source of deadpan humor in the family home. His brief appearances combine teasing commentary with a willingness to turn ordinary domestic moments into performances, especially when Henry brings Grace into the household's orbit.

Identity and Household

In the family's morning routine, Justin sits at one end of the table while Henry's mother sits at the other, and each reads the news on a separate iPad. Justin wears a fluffy white bathrobe and black-rimmed glasses; the scene presents the parents through small, comic contrasts in their dress and habits rather than explaining their relationship. When Henry announces that he has news, Justin responds by joking that his son has been conscripted into a war, treating Henry's formal announcement as an opportunity for mock alarm.

Fatherhood and Humor

When Henry explains that he and Grace are editing the newspaper together, Justin warns him against mixing work and romance. His advice is framed as a joke, but it shows that he recognizes the personal complication in Henry's news. He then invokes the familiar parental rule against sex, drugs, and rock and roll under the family roof, only to undercut the warning by joking that Henry's older sister has already made it irrelevant. Henry answers with a joke about finding a baggie in the mouth of the mounted elk, and Justin treats the exchange as confirmation of his point. Their banter makes the household's parental authority feel affectionate and irreverent rather than solemn.

Hosting Grace

Justin's comic streak also appears in the preparations for dinner. When Henry and Grace arrive, Justin and Henry's mother are unpacking the ingredients in full Star Trek uniforms, complete with Vulcan ears. The elaborate costumes make the homecoming an unexpected spectacle and extend the family's playful style into its welcome of Grace. Across these scenes, Justin is defined less by a separate plot arc than by his role in Henry's family life: he responds to his son's disclosures with teasing, offers advice through humor, and helps make the household an eccentric but welcoming setting.
