Harkness’s asset-management computer system

Panic Room

Harkness’s asset-management computer system is the financial mechanism at the center of a bargain over the panic room at Wortalleth West: Harkness offers access to it as a substitute for the cash Amos French is seeking for Quintagler Industries. Described as continuously shifting assets across accounts and jurisdictions, it promises to make them difficult to follow; the system’s codes, rather than the assets themselves, are what Harkness proposes to hand over.

Design and Claimed Operation

Harkness describes the system as performing a continuous rolling sweep of his assets, transferring them from account to account and jurisdiction to jurisdiction faster than anyone can keep track. The account presents this as the system’s intended operation, not as a process witnessed directly. Its defining feature is therefore not simply that it manages assets, but that its constant movement frustrates efforts to trace or monitor them.

The Panic Room Bargain

Harkness offers to open the panic room at Wortalleth West and give Amos French what Quintagler Industries wants. He argues that cutting through the door would take longer than French can afford to spend in the area, then claims there is an emergency opening mechanism and offers to show French where it is. The system is the proposed reward for accepting Harkness’s route into the room rather than forcing entry.

Access and Significance

When French asks what is inside, Harkness identifies the computer system and says French would receive access codes to pass on to Quintagler Industries. In Harkness’s framing, those codes would make the job complete from Quintagler’s perspective. The system thus functions as leverage in a dangerous negotiation: access to it is exchanged for cooperation, while the promised codes offer a way to satisfy the company without requiring French to seize the assets directly. The evidence establishes Harkness’s description and offer, but does not show the system being opened or the codes being transferred.
