Mullion
Panic RoomMullion is a town on the route to Wortalleth West whose everyday summer activity throws the peril of Don Challenor’s journey into sharp relief. As he is transported under armed guard, the shopping street and surrounding roads mark a landscape that remains ordinary for everyone outside the car, even as Don fears that violence will follow him there.
Setting and Routes
Mullion appears as both a town and a point of passage through the surrounding countryside. In one stretch of the journey, the car travels west to the main road and then north to Mullion. Jack Harkness later turns toward Mullion Cove and takes a lane signposted to Predannack; the road descends into a valley and climbs between patchwork fields before he swings onto a rough track.
A separate passage describes Zlenko cutting through the Laflouder Fields housing estate on his way to Wortalleth West, bypassing Mullion’s centre. With the car’s rear doors locked against escape, Don is carried through the area as though sealed off from the world around him.
The Town in the Journey
The main shopping street is busy with shoppers and holidaymakers. Don looks at them from the car and feels that he no longer belongs to the carefree world they inhabit. The bright, clear day only sharpens the contrast: outwardly, Mullion is peaceful, but Don believes that the killers travelling with him may leave no witnesses once they have what they came for.
The town therefore functions less as a destination than as a threshold between ordinary public life and the danger awaiting Don. Its streets remain open and familiar, yet the locked car and the guns carried by Amos French and Zlenko make escape impossible. The contrast between the visible normality outside and the violence enclosed within gives the journey its foreboding force.
