Schweizerhof Hotel

Panic Room

The Schweizerhof Hotel is a Zürich hotel whose quiet bar becomes a temporary surveillance post and an unlikely source of crucial evidence. While following Filippo Crosetti there, Blake swaps their phones and finds an email about the Elixtris project that points toward concealed work in nanotechnology and bioelectronics.

Setting and Arrival

After Crosetti leaves the tram at its terminus across the river from the main railway station, Blake follows him to the Schweizerhof Hotel, a smart-looking establishment opposite the station’s side entrance. Crosetti collects his room key and goes directly to the bar, establishing the hotel as his immediate refuge rather than a departure point for a train.

The bar is cool, dark, and quiet. Crosetti sits at the counter, orders tequila, drinks it quickly, and orders another. Blake initially watches from a table, then takes a stool at the right-angled bar, positioned a few feet away and looking across its corner at Crosetti.

Surveillance in the Bar

Crosetti repeatedly handles his phone, puts it down, and returns to it, while Blake tries to appear relaxed and work out how to get the information she needs. The brief distance between them gives Blake a chance to observe him without seeming to watch too closely; the quiet room also makes the phone, left beside Crosetti’s tequila, the scene’s decisive object.

Blake orders a gin and tonic. When Crosetti is called to reception to take an urgent call, he leaves his phone on the bar. Blake uses the distraction to slide her own phone around the corner and exchange it for his as she passes his stool. She walks on without hurrying and goes to the ladies’ restroom, where she locks herself in a cubicle to inspect the device.

The Phone and the Elixtris Lead

The latest messages on Crosetti’s phone are in German or Italian, languages Blake cannot read. An English email from Ingrid Denner, dated 12 June, gives her a usable lead: it concerns an upcoming discussion of Ms Townsend’s role in managing the Elixtris project, especially the substantial budget allocated to outside scientists whose first recorded contact with the company had been through Townsend.

Denner notes that the scientists’ expertise in nanotechnology and bioelectronics appears unrelated to delivering a conventional cosmetic product and calls for an explanation. She also directs that communications with her go through her BlackBerry until further notice. Blake suspects that Denner has found the Sapper, though the email itself does not explain the change in communication arrangements. An attachment lists more than twenty professors and other specialists at universities across Europe, the United States, Canada, Australia, and Japan. A later message confirms that the discussion is scheduled for noon on Thursday the 14th in symposium room B4 at the company’s headquarters in Zug.

Narrative Significance

The hotel’s ordinary facilities—reception, bar, concierge area, and restroom—form the route through which Blake turns close observation into access. Crosetti’s urgent call creates the opening, the phone exchange conceals her intervention, and the locked cubicle gives her a private moment to read what she has taken. The Schweizerhof is not the site of the planned meeting, but it is where Blake uncovers the discrepancy between Elixtris’s cosmetic purpose and the outside scientists’ technical expertise, making the hotel bar a pivotal point in her investigation.
