Seven Stars
Panic RoomSeven Stars is a central Falmouth pub and the Monday-night venue of the Falmouth Go Club. Its front bar and tucked-away snug give the narrator a place to seek out Joe, turning a familiar local gathering place into the setting for a carefully timed approach.
Setting and Layout
The pub stands in the centre of Falmouth beside what was once the post office. By the time the narrator arrives, the shops have closed and the town is quiet. The front bar is a narrow taproom with mellow wood, where regulars drink and exchange opinions. The snug bar lies behind it, apart from the main room and less immediately visible from the entrance.
The Go Club
The narrator checks the Falmouth Go Club website, which she had found before leaving London, to confirm that Monday is club night and that the meeting is at Seven Stars. The sessions begin at six. Arriving alone, she orders sparkling water and tells the barman she is there for Go. He points her toward the snug, where two men are seated at a table with a Go board between them, and calls into the room to announce a new recruit to Jerry. Jerry, a bald, bespectacled man with an eager manner, gets up to welcome her and says that beginners are welcome. The club’s presence gives the pub a purpose beyond drinking: it is also a regular meeting place where a newcomer can be received into a shared activity.
Joe and the Later Return
The narrator has checked the club’s schedule because she expects Joe to be there that evening. She means to let him grow accustomed to the fact that he is no longer anonymous before explaining what can be offered to him, and Seven Stars provides the setting for that approach. Later, after leaving the pub, she has to return for her coat. Jeremy Inkpen is standing outside with a half-drunk pint and asks where Joe is; the narrator replies that he has decided to call it a night. The pub thus frames both the planned encounter and its interruption: the Go club brings the narrator into Joe’s orbit, while the coat left behind draws her back after the evening has broken up.
