A Human Ally Arrives

A Human Ally Arrives
Jase joins the party
Jase Graham accompanies Gene, Irene, and Artur to the mainland and becomes an additional link between the station and the aishidi’tat. His security personnel bring equipment and expertise that Bren’s bodyguard can use.
Trust across institutions
Jase is not fully fluent in Ragi, and Bren must communicate the political stakes and cultural limits. Their cooperation grows from practical needs rather than identical assumptions.
Jase’s presence broadens the protection available to the party. It also gives the atevi leadership a trusted human counterpart during a crisis in which communication between Earth and orbit may prove decisive.
A Contingency Shared

A Contingency Shared
Guarding the household
Bren tells Jase that his own team must enter Guild Headquarters and asks Jase to guard Tabini, Ilisidi, Lord Tatiseigi, Cajeiri, and the children. If the Bujavid is attacked, Jase is to move them toward the spaceport and contact Geigi.
Trust without full disclosure
Bren cannot tell Jase every detail of the operation, but gives him clear priorities and fallback routes. Jase accepts the responsibility while warning that he remains answerable to his own command.
The exchange turns friendship into a working alliance. Each man trusts the other to make difficult decisions under pressure, even when neither can control every political or military consequence.
Holding the Children Safe

Holding the Children Safe
A protective role
While Bren attends to political conversations and security, Jase keeps the children close, explains ceremony, and protects them from unsafe food and confusing protocol. His guards remain ready as the celebration gathers a large audience.
A promise beyond the crisis
Jase also undertakes to resist plans to send the Reunioner children to Maudit. He understands that their presence is a political question, but treats their welfare as a personal responsibility.
The partnership extends beyond the immediate Guild operation. Bren relies on Jase to protect the next generation of relationships between humans and Atevi, while Jase relies on Bren’s cultural judgment to understand what the children’s presence means.
