The Young Paidhi

The Young Paidhi
A novice in office
Bren recalls arriving in Shejidan with an approved dictionary, paper, ink, and little understanding of the customs he was expected to navigate. Tabini had just become a young and unpredictable aiji.
Learning the relationship
The office requires more than translating words. Bren must interpret political intention, maintain trust, and survive in a society whose assumptions differ sharply from human ones.
The memory measures how far he has traveled from a junior translator. He now holds titles, responsibilities, and relationships that could not have been captured in the credentials State handed him at the start.

Writing for a Successor
A record for crisis
Bren updates a private handbook containing codes, dossiers, and explanations of events. He adds Lord Geigi’s confidential account so a future paidhi can understand the political history and not just memorize names.
A human perspective requested
Geigi asks Bren to correct misunderstandings about human motives and add commentary. The invitation shows a level of trust that goes beyond official cooperation.
Bren’s preparation acknowledges that his knowledge is valuable but finite. By preserving his interpretation for someone else, he turns personal experience into a tool that may help the relationship between humans and Atevi survive a future emergency.

A Life Entrusted to Allies
Letters against failure
Bren writes instructions for Cajeiri, Toby, Tabini, Ilisidi, Geigi, Lord Tatiseigi, and Narani in case he does not return. He assigns responsibilities and describes whom each recipient should trust.
A burden put down
Once he has written the letters, Bren realizes that many political matters can be handled by others. He is not planning his own death, but he can proceed knowing the people he values have paths forward without him.
The preparation reveals both fear and confidence. Bren accepts that he cannot control every outcome, yet believes that his allies can continue the work of protecting the aishidi’tat and maintaining peace between humans and Atevi.
