The Request for Authority

The Request for Authority
A document with a narrow purpose
Bren asks Tabini for a sealed order concerning the disarmed Dojisigi units, not the more explosive northern events. The document gives him a legitimate reason to demand the Guild Council’s attention.
A personal mandate
Tabini gives Bren his seal ring as the practical equivalent of his presence. The ring makes the mission lawful, but also makes any attack on Bren an attack on the aiji’s authority.
Bren’s diplomatic skill becomes operational leverage. He is not an armed commander; he is the person whose credentials can bring the group through doors that would otherwise require force and cost lives.
Learning the Approach

Learning the Approach
Movement under instruction
Jago teaches Bren to move at a measured pace with the team and read its signals without relying on communications. He must remain close, resist instinctive movements, and follow his bodyguard’s cues.
Unarmed authority
Bren will carry legal documents and the aiji’s ring, not a firearm. The absence of a weapon reinforces his claim that he arrives as an official emissary rather than an attacker.
The training exposes his vulnerability, but also his value. The team can provide force; Bren can provide lawful access and create hesitation among Guild members who might otherwise obey compromised leadership.
A Decision to Go

A Decision to Go
Accepting the risk
Bren understands that his bodyguard fears placing him in danger, yet he prefers to accompany them rather than leave them to enter alone. He writes contingency letters in case the operation fails.
Trust in succession
He places the protection of the aiji’s household and the human children in Jase Graham’s hands, with Geigi and Toby as further points of support. The letters reflect responsibility, not a belief that death is inevitable.
The decision clarifies what Bren considers worth risking himself for: not personal glory, but the chance to restore the institution that upholds the law and to keep the political order from collapsing into another coup.
