Los Encuentros

Pedro Páramo

Los Encuentros is a crossroads on the route to Comala, and the place where Juan Preciado’s search acquires a companion and a startling family connection. Several roads converge there; Juan waits until Abundio the muleteer appears, then learns that both men are sons of Pedro Páramo.

Setting and Encounter

The location is defined by its crossing paths. Juan has stopped at Los Encuentros and waits for a man to show himself. When the man appears, Juan asks where he is going and whether he knows a place called Comala. Abundio replies that Comala is precisely his destination.

Juan falls in behind him, trying to match his pace. Abundio eventually seems to realize that he is being followed and slows down; soon they are walking so close that their shoulders nearly touch. The movement from waiting at a junction to traveling side by side makes Los Encuentros both a literal meeting place and the start of their shared stretch of road.

Narrative Significance

The encounter gives Juan a guide toward Comala, but its consequence is more than practical. As they walk, Abundio tells him that he too is a son of Pedro Páramo. The crossroads thus brings Juan into contact with another branch of the family he has come to find, making the road to Comala a route toward a newly disclosed kinship as well as a destination.
