Care as an ExceptionCare as an Exception from "Piercing". A Safer Intimacy Disclosure and Acceptance Kawashima tells Yoko about his night terrors, his childhood abuse, and his habit of leaving the room when panic…
A Safer Intimacy Disclosure and Acceptance Kawashima tells Yoko about his night terrors, his childhood abuse, and his habit of leaving the room when panic overwhelms him. He withholds the story of the woman he stabbed, but risks sharing much of what he has long concealed. Yoko responds without dismissing his suffering or treating him as helpless. Her attention gives him an experience of closeness that does not immediately turn into punishment or rejection. A Conditional Calm After they marry, Kawashima’s self-loathing and episodes of terror become less frequent. Yoko’s steady presence makes ordinary life feel possible, and the smell of her baking comes to signify happiness for him. That improvement is real but not absolute. The return of intrusive fear after Rie’s birth shows that love can offer stability without erasing the past.
The Promise at the CribThe Promise at the Crib from "Piercing". Reassurance in the Dark A Father’s Vigil Kawashima stands over Rie’s crib while Yoko sleeps, holding the ice pick as he repeats that he will not stab the baby.
Reassurance in the Dark A Father’s Vigil Kawashima stands over Rie’s crib while Yoko sleeps, holding the ice pick as he repeats that he will not stab the baby. He thinks of Rie as fragile and of himself as a possible source of danger, despite having no wish to harm her. The quiet room intensifies his isolation. He cannot make the fear disappear simply by telling himself that a good father would never act on it. A Promise Under Strain When Yoko asks what he is doing, Kawashima hides the ice pick and gives an ordinary explanation about his work. He protects her from the immediate truth, but the concealment also leaves him alone with the nightly ritual. His whispered assurance to Rie, “Everything’s going to be all right,” is both a promise of care and an attempt to calm himself. Its tenderness does not remove the danger of the obsession that surrounds it.
The Imagined RescuerThe Imagined Rescuer from "Piercing". A Story Chiaki Needs The Unknown Helper After self-harming, Chiaki believes that a mysterious man has repeatedly taken her to the hospital.
A Story Chiaki Needs The Unknown Helper After self-harming, Chiaki believes that a mysterious man has repeatedly taken her to the hospital. She longs to know who he is, because the story offers a counterweight to her experience of being abandoned or restrained by others. Kawashima waits outside while she receives treatment. For Chiaki, his decision to remain becomes evidence that he may be the rescuer she has imagined. A Real Gesture, a False Conclusion Kawashima’s concern is genuine in the immediate crisis, but his reasons are complicated by his own fear, plans, and desire to avoid detection. Chiaki reads his actions as selfless devotion without knowing the danger he brought to the hotel. The episode shows how a real act of care can sustain a false story. Her hope is not invented from nothing, but it cannot tell her whether the person beside her is safe.
The Rescue Becomes a ThreatThe Rescue Becomes a Threat from "Piercing". The Same Man, Two Meanings A Bond Built on Misreading At Chiaki’s apartment, she believes Kawashima is a uniquely dependable man who has come to understand…
The Same Man, Two Meanings A Bond Built on Misreading At Chiaki’s apartment, she believes Kawashima is a uniquely dependable man who has come to understand her. She imagines that he sought her out because he cared for her, while he is preoccupied with whether she read his plans and what she may tell others. They share an intimate space, but not a shared account of why they are there. Her hope and his fear grow alongside one another rather than resolving into mutual trust. The Return of Violence When Kawashima suspects that Chiaki has read his notes, he concludes that he must kill her. The person she has taken for a rescuer becomes the person who binds and threatens her. The reversal does not mean his earlier kindness was wholly false. It shows instead that care and violence can coexist in a person whose actions remain dangerous, making Chiaki’s longing for dependable love especially vulnerable to misrecognition.
Attachment After RevelationAttachment After Revelation from "Piercing". Feeling After Disillusionment The Rescuer Falls Away Chiaki reads Kawashima’s plans and recognizes that he did not come to her as a secret admirer or a devoted…
Feeling After Disillusionment The Rescuer Falls Away Chiaki reads Kawashima’s plans and recognizes that he did not come to her as a secret admirer or a devoted protector. She understands that his interest began with a planned assault, and that her interpretation of his patience and tenderness was incomplete. Still, the emotional meaning of their time together does not vanish at once. She remembers walking beside him and sitting with him in the taxi as moments of unusual beauty, even though she now knows how much she misunderstood. A Painful Independence Chiaki assumes that Kawashima will return to Yoko and that she cannot make him stay. Rather than force a promise from him, she prepares herself for the loneliness she expects to feel. Her second piercing becomes a private attempt at strength, not a solution to the attachment. The ending leaves her feelings unresolved and keeps the relationship’s central contradiction in view: a moment of real tenderness can bind her to someone who has also made her unsafe.
