Geppetto Is Swallowed by the Great Shark

Pinocchio (Tania Zamorsky Edition)

Geppetto’s swallowing by the Great Shark turns a capsized boat into a two-year imprisonment: he survives inside the creature by scavenging the cargo of a merchant ship swallowed in the same storm, but when Pinocchio finds him, the last supplies are gone and the last candle is burning.

The Storm and the Swallowing

Geppetto recounts that the storm which overturned his small boat also drove him into the water. The Great Shark was nearby; it surfaced its tongue, seized him, and swallowed him whole. The account makes his disappearance at sea an act of sudden predation rather than a chosen voyage or an ordinary shipwreck.

The danger is compounded by the scale of what the shark consumes. After swallowing Geppetto, it also takes in a merchant ship that has gone down in the same storm. Its sailors all escape, but the vessel sinks. The shark swallows it in one gulp and spits out only the mast, which had lodged between its teeth like a fish bone.

Two Years Inside the Shark

Geppetto tells Pinocchio that he has been trapped inside the Great Shark for two years, a duration that felt to him like two centuries. His survival depends on the merchant ship’s cargo, which includes preserved meat in tin boxes, hardtack, wine, raisins, cheese, coffee, sugar, stearin candles, and wax matches. The vessel that could not save its crew thus becomes, through its stores, Geppetto’s provision against starvation in an otherwise impossible confinement.

That supply has finally been exhausted by the time of the conversation. Geppetto has reached the end of the food in the ship’s storeroom, and the candle Pinocchio sees burning is his last. He warns that without more light they will both be left in darkness, making the rescue scene a moment of immediate need as well as a disclosure of how long he has endured.

The Event’s Revelation and Frame

The swallowing is presented retrospectively: Geppetto explains the past events to Pinocchio after they have reunited inside the shark. His account supplies the missing history behind his absence and establishes that he has remained alive through resourcefulness and the accidental abundance of the swallowed ship. The two-year confinement also sharpens the stakes of their present situation: reunion has occurred, but the food is gone and their remaining light is nearly spent.
