Starter Presentation

Three Familiar Choices Three starter Pokémon appear before the player, and the ordinary instruction is to choose one. Their presence makes the first decision feel immediate and final. The Unspoken Alternative The game does not openly announce that another possibility exists. The player must either accept the visible options or test the boundaries of the tutorial. Walking Away

Refusing the First Choice The player walks away instead of tapping one of the displayed Pokémon. The act turns movement, normally a requirement, into a deliberate tactic. Repeated Disappearance The starters vanish and reappear near the avatar. Their repetition tests whether the player will abandon the experiment and settle for the conventional route. Narrative Importance The player discovers that the tutorial has hidden flexibility. Knowledge is gained through experimentation rather than passive compliance.

The Fifth Appearance

Pikachu Appears On the fifth appearance, Pikachu joins the original starter group. The desired alternative becomes visible only after the player has sustained the unusual behavior. Patience Rewarded The encounter rewards persistence without requiring advanced skill. The player’s choice is now informed by discovery rather than by the first screen presented. Narrative Importance Pikachu’s arrival gives the opening a miniature quest structure: departure, repetition, anticipation, and revelation.

Special Capture

Capturing the Mascot The player taps Pikachu and throws a Poké Ball. The capture is mechanically similar to any other encounter, but its symbolic value is greater because it was deliberately earned. Chosen Beginning The player’s first partner now reflects personal preference and persistence. The opening identity of the Trainer is shaped by an act of agency. Narrative Importance The scene resolves the optional quest by making the beginner feel exceptional without changing the underlying rules of capture.

A Memorable Start

The Pikachu Keepsake The new Trainer begins with Pikachu rather than one of the expected starters. The result gives the account a distinctive first entry in its Pokédex.
