“The Fruit Slipped and Fell into the Milk”

Ponniyin Selvan

The Fruit Slipped and Fell into the Milk is a proverb-like expression Sundara Chozhar uses when Mandhakini unexpectedly finds her way into his presence. It turns a failed search and a startling arrival into an image of chance: something sought does not appear where expected, yet arrives all the same.

Meaning and Image

The saying compares the lady’s arrival to a fruit slipping into milk. Sundara Chozhar presents the outcome as an accidental conjunction, not as the result of the searchers’ success. Its homely image gives a light, almost pleased cast to a moment whose circumstances had been uncertain.

Use in the Scene

The expression follows an unsuccessful effort to locate Mandhakini. The searchers had waited until evening and looked inside Pazhuvoor Palace; they had even discussed her in a room adjoining the emperor’s while he slept. Yet Mandhakini found her own way to his presence. Sundara Chozhar invokes the saying to mark the reversal between failing to find her and having her appear before him, making the proverb both a comment on coincidence and a compact account of the scene’s turn.
