Kundhavai’s order that Vandhiyathevan stay with Karikalan

Ponniyin Selvan

Kundhavai’s order that Vandhiyathevan stay with Karikalan is a direct command of constant presence: Vandhiyathevan is not to abandon the prince’s side. At Kadambur, that instruction intervenes when Karikalan considers sending him away on a mission, making personal loyalty an immediate constraint on the prince’s plans.

The Command and Its Invocation

With reinforcements from Malayaman under consideration, Karikalan wonders whether Vandhiyathevan might be sent on the mission. Vandhiyathevan answers that Kundhavai has commanded him never to leave Karikalan’s side, presenting the order as the reason he cannot simply accept a new assignment.

Karikalan’s Response

Karikalan acknowledges that Vandhiyathevan has carried out the command satisfactorily. He then turns to another possible messenger, Parthibendra Pallavar, whom he describes as having little to occupy him, and decides to send him to Malayaman instead. Kundhavai’s instruction thus remains in force while the urgent mission is assigned elsewhere.

Function in the Scene

The exchange sets Kundhavai’s authority alongside Karikalan’s immediate needs: the prince can consider dispatching his companion, but Vandhiyathevan’s obligation to remain with him shapes the choice. Karikalan’s approving response makes the order more than a private reminder; it is a duty he recognizes, even as the conversation moves toward another way of obtaining reinforcements.
