Mandakini Uncovers the Assassination Plot
Ponniyin SelvanMandakini Uncovers the Assassination Plot is the moment when Mandhakini, watching from within the palace, learns that the danger to the Chozha dynasty is an organized plan rather than a rumor: Sundara Chozhar is to die on Friday, Arulmozhi Varman has been found, and the conspirators intend to destroy the ruling line. The discovery turns Mandhakini from a silent observer into a witness to several converging threats, though the evidence here ends before she can stop them.
From the Crowds to the Palace
Mandhakini’s path into Thanjavur begins amid disorder. A storm has damaged Sendhan Amudhan’s home, and Amudhan is ill with fever when Poonguzhali arrives with Azhwarkkadiyaan. Poonguzhali persuades her aunt to accompany them by conveying that Sundara Chozhar is gravely ill and longs to see her; she also says that Kundhavai is waiting to bring Mandhakini before him. Mandhakini agrees, despite her unease at the journey and the crowded city.
At the fort, the Velakkara Regiment is entering as a large crowd presses through behind it. Mandhakini follows the crowd rather than taking the secret route Azhwarkkadiyaan proposes. People begin whispering that she resembles Pazhuvoor Ilaiya Rani. Poonguzhali and Azhwarkkadiyaan try to shield her, but their intervention draws criticism from onlookers. The regiment turns back to investigate, separates Mandhakini from her companions, and surrounds her; when the street disturbance subsides, Poonguzhali and Azhwarkkadiyaan discover that she has vanished. Their search finds no trace of her.
The book elsewhere presents royal power in public, ceremonial form: at Kadambur, crowds surge to see Aditha, and a herald recites the Chozha lineage before announcing his arrival. That spectacle supplies a pointed contrast to Mandhakini’s later discovery. The dynasty celebrated before the crowd is also the target of a plan discussed in concealed passages and watched from behind palace columns.
What Mandhakini Observes
By the time Mandhakini is watching the palace, she understands that people dear to her are inside and in grave danger from the men moving through the subterranean passage. She prays for the strength to prevent Mandhiravadhi and Soman Saambavan from carrying out their intentions. Her position gives her a view of their movements, but not yet a way to confront them or enter the passage herself.
She sees the two men emerge from the underground chamber and climb to an upper balcony. Because it is daylight, they hide behind columns and peer into the palace interior. Mandhiravadhi no longer carries the torch; Soman Saambavan has a spear. The spear passes to Mandhiravadhi, who aims it toward a chamber, but lowers it again: the gesture is a demonstration, not an attack. The men disappear, and Mandhakini watches the entrance until they return with a torch and close it behind them.
Their actions expose a practical stage of the conspiracy as well as its purpose. Mandhiravadhi checks that Saambavan has learned how to open the passage. Saambavan assures him that he can complete their mission, then insists that Mandhiravadhi must carry out his own task. Their exchange makes clear that the passage is not merely a route through the palace: it is access the conspirators have deliberately acquired and intend to use as part of a coordinated operation.
The Assassination Plan Revealed
Saambavan tells Mandhiravadhi that Sundara Chozhar is to die that Friday. He assigns responsibility for Aditha to Ilaiya Rani, saying there is no need to fear for that part of the plan. The exchange therefore links the impending attack on the emperor to a wider effort against the royal family, even though the conspirators treat Aditha’s fate as someone else’s responsibility.
The conspirators also reveal that Arulmozhi Varman is alive and concealed at Naagai. Saambavan says that the two people who had protected him are now in Thanjavur, and that he has seen Poonguzhali, her mute aunt, and the Vaishnavite in the crowds. He believes Arulmozhi cannot escape and intends to send Kramavithan to destroy him. The revelation changes the meaning of the reports surrounding the younger prince: his presumed death has not ended the danger, and the conspirators have identified both his hiding place and a means of pursuing him.
When Saambavan asks about Madhuranthakan, Mandhiravadhi replies that he may live. Their stated reason is political: the Chozha throne can remain occupied while the Pandiya Chakravarthy comes of age. The plan is thus not simply to remove individual Chozha rulers. Its perpetrators intend to clear a path for a rival succession, while keeping Madhuranthakan alive as a temporary occupant of the throne.
The Passage and the Unresolved Threat
After the conspirators leave, Mandhakini approaches the place where the underground passage lies and tries to open it. She cannot. When she followed the men earlier, distance had allowed her to observe them; now that same distance prevents her from seeing how the hatch works. Her eyesight, which helped her watch their movements, cannot supply the missing knowledge of the mechanism.
Mandhakini instead waits, trusting her foresight that one of the men may return. Soman Saambavan does return after seeing Mandhiravadhi off, carrying a torch that burns less brightly than before. Though he had spoken grandly in company, his furtive looks into the dark corners betray fear. The episode ends with the plot exposed but not thwarted: Mandhakini has learned the date of Sundara Chozhar’s planned death, the threat to Arulmozhi Varman, and the conspirators’ dynastic purpose, while the hidden entrance remains beyond her grasp.
