Pandiya Abathudhavis

Ponniyin Selvan

Pandiya Abathudhavis are the anti-Chozha conspirators associated with Nandhini and her vow to destroy the Chozha clan. Their most consequential documented act is the crowning of a child as a Pandiya king at the Thiruppurambiyam Memorial, a challenge to Chozha authority bound to the protection of the child’s crown.

Identity and Political Aim

The Pandiya Abathudhavis are identified as Nandhini’s cohorts in a conspiracy against the Chozhas. When Adithan’s fear of meeting her is discussed, Vandhiyathevan explains that she has sworn to annihilate his clan in company with the Pandiya plotters. The evidence presents them as political allies in that undertaking, but does not name other members or describe a formal hierarchy.

Their stated objective is not limited to an abstract grievance: the reported pledge is to destroy the Chozha clan. Nandhini’s connection to the group therefore brings dynastic conflict into intimate family relations, as the revelation that she is Adithan’s sister stands in direct contrast to the conspiracy attributed to her.

The Coronation at the Memorial

Vandhiyathevan says he witnessed Nandhini and the plotters act at midnight at the Thiruppurambiyam Memorial. There, a child was crowned as a Pandiya king in a deliberately defiant act against the Chozhas. Adithan later recalls the report as the crowning of a child near a memorial shrine in the dense forest along the Kollidam River.

The crown gives the conspiracy a visible political claim: the child’s installation asserts a rival kingship rather than merely expressing opposition. Nandhini swears a blood oath to preserve and protect the crown against all foes, binding her personal commitment to the group’s cause. The evidence describes this ceremony and pledge, but does not establish what subsequent military or administrative actions the conspirators undertook.

Conflict and Narrative Significance

The plotters’ alliance with Nandhini intensifies the succession and dynastic conflict by joining a rival Pandiya claim to a declared campaign against the Chozha clan. Adithan learns of both the oath and the coronation through Vandhiyathevan’s account; the revelation makes the threat to his family inseparable from the newly disclosed kinship between him and Nandhini.

The group’s role is consequently defined less by its internal organization than by the political meaning of its actions: a child is placed on a rival throne, and Nandhini pledges to defend that claim. The contrast between her blood relationship to the Chozha royal family and her reported alliance with its enemies makes the conspiracy a focal point of the story’s collision between kinship, vengeance, and dynastic power.
