The warning against Karikalan’s visit to Kadambur

Ponniyin Selvan

The warning against Karikalan’s visit to Kadambur is an urgent attempt by Kundhavai Devi and Aniruddha Brahmaraayar to prevent Aditha Karikalan from travelling into danger. Delivered by Vallavarayan Vandhiyathevan, it identifies the visit as a risk serious enough to demand intervention; Karikalan nevertheless proceeds, and Nandhini later challenges the warning by portraying its authors as enemies of the royal family.

Background and Purpose

The danger behind the warning is made explicit when Karikalan identifies the threat as an attempt to assassinate him in revenge for Veera Pandiyan’s execution. Vallavarayan Vandhiyathevan explains that Kundhavai Devi and Aniruddha Brahmaraayar sent him in haste precisely to prevent such a catastrophe. The warning is therefore not merely advice against a politically fraught visit: it is an effort to keep Karikalan from entering a situation in which revenge could become murder.

Karikalan acknowledges that both his sister and the chief minister tried to dissuade him, but treats their judgment as unable to overcome destiny. His response establishes the warning’s limit: it can identify danger and mobilize loyal intermediaries, but it cannot compel him to change course.

Delivery and Reception

Vallavarayan Vandhiyathevan is the messenger charged with conveying the warning. Karikalan’s remark that Vandhiyathevan had thrown himself across his path frames the intervention as a determined effort to stop the journey, rather than a casual caution. Yet Karikalan goes to Kadambur despite the appeal, making his disregard of it part of the danger the warning sought to avert.

The message was not carried by Vandhiyathevan alone. In a later conversation with Nandhini, Karikalan recalls that Azhwarkkadiyaan and Aniruddhar had also brought warnings against the visit. The repetition shows that several trusted or authoritative figures had tried to turn him back; the warning was a concerted intervention, not an isolated suspicion.

Nandhini’s Counterclaim

As the companions approach, Karikalan raises the earlier warnings with Nandhini. She answers by alleging that Aniruddhar seeks to deprive Sundara Chozhar of his life and Karikalan of his birthright. Her response transforms the warning’s meaning: instead of treating it as protection from an assassination plot, she presents its authors as conspirators with motives against the king and prince. Karikalan’s immediate question exposes the allegation as a challenge requiring explanation, rather than an established truth.

The warning thus becomes a point of conflict over whom Karikalan should trust. Kundhavai Devi and Aniruddha Brahmaraayar send a message intended to preserve him; Nandhini recasts that intervention as evidence of treachery. Because Karikalan has already ignored the warning and arrived at Kadambur, the dispute over its credibility unfolds after the preventive measure has failed to keep him away.
