Thiruppurambiyam Forest

Ponniyin Selvan

Thiruppurambiyam Forest is the setting for a clandestine coronation that turns a forest memorial into the stage for a direct challenge to Chozha rule. There, conspirators crowned a boy of about five as the Pandiya king and pledged to annihilate the Chozha Dynasty, making the location significant not for any described physical feature but for the political act carried out within it.

Setting and Association

The forest is identified in connection with the memorial to Prithvipathi. The account places the ceremony near that memorial, at midnight a few days before Aniruddha Brahmaraayar reports it to the emperor. No further description of the forest or its surroundings is given; its defining association in this episode is the secret gathering held there.

The Midnight Coronation

At the gathering, conspirators thrust a boy no more than five years old upon a throne and crowned him Pandiya king. The ceremony was not presented as an isolated claim to a title: those present also pledged themselves to the destruction of the Chozha Dynasty. The presence of the Pazhuvoor Ilaiya Rani among the conspirators connects the event to the political suspicions surrounding her household.

Witness and Political Significance

Aniruddha Brahmaraayar brings the coronation to the emperor’s attention as evidence of a conspiracy. When challenged about the source of his report, he identifies Vandhiyathevan as the true witness; his own disciple arrived only after the ceremony was over. The distinction establishes the account’s chain of knowledge while making the forest the scene of a concealed act whose implications reach beyond it: a child’s crowning there gives the conspirators’ opposition to Chozha rule a rival king and a stated dynastic purpose.
