Antelope

Queen of Hearts

Antelope are recurring wild animals on the estate, first encountered at a distance and later caught in the flight from a spreading fire. Their appearances shift from a brief, wary encounter with Georgiana to a shared struggle for refuge, showing how the blaze imperils both the people in the house and the animals around it.

Encounters on the Track

While walking toward the house on the bluff, Georgiana sees a large antelope with impressive horns watching her from a safe distance. When it snorts, she decides not to approach and makes her way back to the road with her stick ready. The encounter is brief, but it reinforces the strangeness of an estate where wild animals move through the grounds and where Georgiana feels ordinary rules do not quite apply.

Driven by the Fire

As flames spread behind the house, antelopes burst from the forest and run past the people gathered there. Their attempted escape is blocked by the fire, turning the surrounding grounds into a hazard rather than open refuge. The animals’ movement makes the danger visible: the fire has reached beyond the building and is closing off the routes by which wildlife might flee.

Refuge and Loss

During the worst of the fire, a couple of antelopes leap into the pool with the people seeking safety there. Other animals remain in the forest and do not survive. The contrast between those that reach the water and those trapped by the flames gives the animal episodes a concrete place in the catastrophe: the pool becomes temporary refuge across the human-animal divide, while the surrounding fire leaves the antelopes’ fate uneven.
