Bella Escapes Police Custody
Queen of HeartsBella Brightwell’s escape from police custody occurs in the unsettled aftermath of the fire, when the sheriff is preparing to take the survivors to headquarters. As Stella Brightwell recognizes the sister who saved her and offers to repair their estrangement, Bella slips away before the truck departs, avoiding the statements the sheriff intends to collect and leaving their reunion incomplete.
The Journey to Headquarters
The survivors climb down in wet clothes, and Belinda asks how they can leave when the motorcars have all been destroyed. Sheriff Billings offers to take them to headquarters in his truck, acknowledging the tight squeeze and explaining that he will need statements from everyone. His offer makes the survivors’ next destination—and the prospect of official questioning—clear, but Bella does not remain with the group long enough to reach it.
Reunion and Unfinished Reconciliation
As the party prepares to leave, Stella looks at her sister in wonder, initially comparing Bella’s arrival to the appearance of a guardian angel. Bella answers that she may indeed be Stella’s guardian angel. The exchange joins the immediate fact of Stella’s rescue to the history between the sisters: Stella recalls that they once had only each other, while Bella reminds her that Stella had left her behind and said she was holding her back.
Stella admits that leaving Bella was foolish and hurtful. Because Bella has now saved her life, Stella says she will try to make amends. The apology opens the possibility of reconciliation, but the scene does not show the sisters resolving their past or agreeing on what comes next.
Disappearance and Consequence
Sheriff Billings helps Stella aboard the truck. Bella watches her sister with fierce longing, but when the narrator takes her own turn joining the others, Bella is still outside the departing group. The doors close, and the truck sets off; only upon reaching its destination do the survivors realize that Bella has somehow melted away while they were boarding.
Bella’s disappearance means she avoids accompanying the survivors to headquarters and the statements Sheriff Billings requested. It also turns the scene’s movement toward reunion into another separation: Stella has offered to make amends, but Bella leaves before that offer can become a shared course of action. The narrator says she does not blame Bella and secretly wishes her well, leaving Bella’s immediate destination and the sisters’ future reconciliation unstated.
