Georgiana's Bait-Bracelet Operation
Queen of HeartsGeorgiana’s Bait-Bracelet Operation is Darcy O’Mara’s attempt to draw a jewel thief into another theft aboard the RMS Berengaria by making Georgiana Rannoch appear to possess a tempting royal jewel. The plan turns her own cabin and the ship’s final ball into baited spaces, but its apparent success only deepens the mystery: after the bracelet disappears during the dance, it is found again on her bedside table.
The plan and its risks
After several jewel thefts aboard ship, Darcy proposes using Georgiana as bait, reasoning that a thief might be encouraged to strike again. Captain Harrison objects to putting her in danger. Georgiana initially questions the idea’s plausibility: she is known to be penniless and ordinarily wears only modest garnets or pearls. Darcy counters that her connection to England’s richest family could make a supposed royal jewel irresistible.
The story is to be specific enough to tempt a thief without requiring Georgiana to display the jewel openly. She should imply that Queen Mary has lent her a rare family piece, that she ought to have left it in the bank, and that it is safely kept in her cabin’s jewel case. Georgiana is to let the rumor circulate while her maid remains in the cabin when she is away; the cabin will also be watched at night. With only the last night before the ship lands, the scheme has little time to work. Its central risk is plain: the bait depends on Georgiana advertising a valuable possession while the people guarding her try to anticipate when someone might come for it.
Spreading the story
Georgiana carries out her part on deck, where shipboard talk has already turned to the robberies. In conversation with Algie Broxley-Foggett, Tubby Halliday, and a young American, she presents herself as having borrowed a fine bracelet from her cousin Queen Mary. She says she has chosen not to lock it in the safe because jewels are meant to be worn, while reassuring the group that her cabin is locked and her maid keeps watch. The account gives the proposed theft a plausible opportunity: the bracelet is supposedly valuable, but not inaccessible or permanently secured.
Tubby responds by pointing out that a locked cabin and a maid would not necessarily have protected the woman whose diamond ring was stolen. His interest, however, is as much in the potential newspaper story as in the crime; he imagines reporting a burglar’s capture aboard a luxury liner. Algie urges him to patrol the halls rather than linger with the group. Their exchange shows the rumor moving beyond Darcy and Georgiana’s private plan, though there is no sign that any listener acts on it that day.
Darcy does not show himself for the rest of the day. Georgiana spends much of the afternoon in her cabin, but no burglar appears. The only visitor is a stewardess carrying clean towels and asking whether Georgiana had requested extras; Georgiana says she had not, and the stewardess leaves. The encounter is an unexplained detail rather than proof of an attempted entry. As evening approaches, the absence of a theft forces Georgiana to make the bait more conspicuous.
The ball and the missing bracelet
For the final black-and-white ball, Georgiana wears white silk evening pajamas, a jet ornament in her hair, and a jet bangle, adding rouge and bright red lipstick. Claire Daniels approves of the outfit. After hearing about the shipboard burglaries, Claire remarks that she does not travel with her good jewels and questions the sense of bringing valuable stones aboard. Georgiana then borrows Claire’s sparkling bracelet to make the lure more tempting. Claire later explains that it is only a copy and that its clasp has always been loose; Georgiana, by contrast, has been presenting it to others as a valuable royal loan.
At the ball, Georgiana shows Darcy the bracelet and says it is gone. She remembers wearing it, but cannot identify the moment it disappeared. She had been dancing with Algie, whose energetic jive brought her into contact with other dancers. Darcy asks her to return to the ballroom, announce the loss, appear upset, and watch people’s reactions. The operation has shifted: instead of waiting for a thief to enter a watched cabin, Georgiana must use the reported loss to observe the people among whom the bracelet may have vanished.
Georgiana follows the instruction. She tells Claire and Stella Brightwell that the bracelet has been lost while she was dancing, then looks through the room. Stella appears to search diligently, leaving Georgiana to wonder whether she could have taken it while they were sitting together or as Georgiana rose to dance. Georgiana recognizes that suspicion as difficult to credit, but cannot rule out the opportunity. Algie denies seeing the bracelet and offers to help look. Soon half the crowd has joined the search, yet it produces nothing.
The return to the cabin
When Georgiana goes to bed, the first sound she notices is Queenie snoring on the bed. The bracelet is lying on the bedside table. Its reappearance overturns the immediate assumption that it has been lost in the ballroom, but does not reveal who brought it back or when. Georgiana wonders whether she forgot to put it on, then rejects that explanation because she remembers showing it to people and describing it as a priceless piece. The operation therefore ends its reported sequence not with a captured thief, but with the bait returned to the very cabin it was supposed to make vulnerable.
The episode also runs alongside the strain in Georgiana and Darcy’s relationship. Their time together is repeatedly interrupted by the investigation; after Darcy asks her to return to the ballroom, she laments their brief, disrupted moments alone. He tells her he is trying to earn money to make good the losses caused by his father and hopes one day to buy back the family home and racing stables. He does not feel able to marry her while offering only a poor flat. Their kiss before she resumes the search makes the operation more than a practical diversion: it places Georgiana’s cooperation with Darcy’s plan beside their postponed future, while leaving both the missing bracelet’s brief disappearance and its unexplained return unresolved.
