Giraffe
Queen of HeartsGiraffe is a striking animal presence in the danger surrounding Cy Goldman’s estate. In one pursuit it unexpectedly blocks the woman Georgiana Rannoch is chasing; during the later fire, it emerges from the trees and reaches the safety of the estate gate with Zebras. Its appearances turn the estate’s animal-filled grounds from a backdrop into part of the action and its peril.
The Encounter in the Trees
While Georgiana and Belinda pursue a fleeing woman through the trees, a very tall Giraffe steps out between two large oak trees. Georgiana recalls having seen giraffes at the zoo, but the animal seems enormous at close range in its natural surroundings. The woman, moving quickly and watching her footing, does not notice it until one of its feet lands directly in front of her. She gasps, turns, and runs into Georgiana and Belinda, who seize her by the arms. The Giraffe’s sudden appearance interrupts the pursuit and helps bring the confrontation to a halt.
Flight from the Fire
Later, as flames advance across the estate, Giraffe comes out of the trees into the forecourt, following two Zebras. The animals stop on the gravel, trembling and uncertain where to go, while Georgiana and the others wait amid smoke and approaching fire. The danger is immediate: the cottage where Bella Brightwell has spent the night goes up in flames as they wait for Belinda to return.
Escape and Significance
By the time the group is evacuated by fire truck, the area around the gate has escaped the fire. There, Georgiana sees Giraffe cowering beside the fence with several Zebras and is relieved that the animals have not met a terrible end. Its two appearances mark contrasting kinds of peril: first, its immense body unexpectedly obstructs a human pursuit; later, the fire threatens the animal itself, and its survival becomes part of the relief at reaching safety. The narrative gives no further account of its fate after the evacuation.
