Jimmy

Queen of Hearts

Jimmy is the gatekeeper at the estate, where his control of the entrance and written log make him an important witness to who arrived and when. His precise account of Stella Brightwell’s arrival corrects the narrator’s mistaken recollection and turns an ordinary checkpoint into a source of investigative evidence.

Identity and Role

The narrator recognizes Jimmy as the gatekeeper and approaches him while walking back to the house after riding down with Mr. O’Mara. Jimmy’s post is more than a casual watch: the gate can be opened only from inside his small gatehouse, placing control of entry in his hands.

Records and Account of Arrivals

Jimmy explains that he records arrivals in a book and says that nobody unexpected has recently appeared. He recalls Francisco bringing supplies two days earlier, followed the next day by the visiting party in three cars and, later, Stella Brightwell. His confidence rests on the routine of his work: he regards keeping track of those entering and leaving as a straightforward, familiar responsibility.

The timing matters because the narrator initially believes Stella Brightwell was already with the party, inside Mr. Goldman’s car. Jimmy corrects her: Stella arrived on her own in a convertible, about half an hour after the other cars. His account separates Stella’s movements from those of the group and supplies a concrete discrepancy for the investigation to consider.

Narrative Significance

Jimmy has a brief but distinct role as an observant keeper of access and information. The gatehouse, the logbook, and his memory of the cars provide a practical record against which the narrator’s assumptions can be tested. By identifying Stella Brightwell’s separate arrival, he helps establish that the apparent sequence of events at the estate was not quite as the narrator remembered it.
