Ronnie

Queen of Hearts

Ronnie is a minor but consequential presence in the story, linked to the Goldman circle through information, emergency work, and personal assistance. He does not dominate the action; instead, his interventions clarify what is happening around him and help other characters move forward. His most important contributions reveal the publicity pressure surrounding Craig Hart, help organize a response when fire threatens the house, and offer Belinda a route toward film work.

Information and the Goldman Circle

Ronnie gives Georgiana information that changes how she understands Craig’s pursuit of her. He tells her that Cy Goldman had been pressing Craig to marry someone considered suitable, in order to quiet rumors that might damage Craig’s career. Georgiana connects that pressure to Craig’s interest in her and the publicity value of marrying a British aristocrat. The revelation also makes Belinda reconsider how close she came to accepting Craig’s proposal and going to Reno, where she feared she might have entered a sexless marriage. Ronnie is therefore an important source of information, although the account does not explain how he learned of Goldman’s demands.

The disclosure reaches Georgiana through Ronnie rather than through Craig or Goldman. That indirect route matters: it brings private career management into the open and casts Craig’s proposed marriage as potentially shaped by the studio world’s concern with rumors and public image. Ronnie’s role is to supply the fact; Georgiana and Belinda draw out its personal consequences.

Response to the Fire

When a fire starts near the gate, Ronnie treats it as an urgent practical danger. He stands to call the fire department and get the groundsmen involved, warning that a fire can spread quickly at that time of year. His response is organized around containment rather than speculation about the person who started it. The sheriff suspects the fire may be an attempt to draw people away from the gatehouse, but Ronnie’s immediate concern is to mobilize help.

The danger becomes more immediate when embers fall around the group. Ronnie returns with Algie, whose fear is heightened by the discovery that part of the house has a shake roof. That detail sharpens the threat: the fire is not merely a distant blaze but a danger that could reach the building. Ronnie’s actions place him among those responding to the crisis, even as the scene gives Algie’s alarm and Belinda’s decision to retrieve her clothes more emphasis.

Help for Belinda

After the crisis, Ronnie visits Belinda and tells her that Golden Pictures will take care of what she needs. He also says he will arrange an introduction to the studio’s costume department. Belinda sees the possibility as a major break, so Ronnie’s help offers her a concrete professional opening rather than vague encouragement.

These actions give Ronnie a modest but varied function in the narrative. He is a conduit for information about the pressures shaping Craig’s choices, a practical participant when fire puts the household at risk, and a useful contact in Belinda’s effort to find work. The evidence does not establish his formal position or the limits of his influence, but it shows him repeatedly helping others through timely knowledge and access.
