Zebra
Queen of HeartsZebra are recurring animals in the estate’s wooded grounds, first encountered during Georgiana Rannoch and Belinda’s pursuit of Bella and later caught up in the estate fire. Their movements briefly punctuate the pursuit, then become part of the larger crisis as animals flee the advancing flames and several zebras are found alive by the fence afterward.
Encounters in the Woods
While Georgiana Rannoch and Belinda press through increasingly dense forest, two zebras trot out from a bush in front of them and run off. The sudden appearance makes Belinda gasp and grab Georgiana. Georgiana treats the animals as more frightened of the people than the people are of them; Belinda counters that she herself is badly frightened. The exchange gives the encounter a moment of nervous levity amid their search, while showing the animals moving freely through the grounds.
Caught in the Estate Fire
During the fire, zebras appear among the animals displaced from the woodland. As flames spread around the house, a zebra bursts from the trees, followed by another; they stop on the gravel, trembling and uncertain where to go. The fire has left the surrounding animals with few safe directions to flee. Later, antelopes run past the house but are turned back by flames, and smaller animals join the escape. The zebras’ emergence is part of this broader movement, not an isolated spectacle: the fire changes the grounds from habitat into a threatened enclosure.
Flight and Survival
The people eventually take refuge in the swimming pool as the fire reaches the house, while animals continue to flee through the grounds. After the fire in the parkland burns out, fire engines arrive. On the way down to the gate, Georgiana sees green trees beside the fence and several zebras sheltering there. Their presence confirms that at least some of the animals survived the blaze; the narrative does not establish whether these are the same zebras seen earlier in the forest.
Narrative Significance
The zebras’ appearances link the earlier forest pursuit to the later emergency without making them part of the human investigation. At first, their sudden movement produces a brief contrast between Belinda’s fear and Georgiana’s confidence about how the animals perceive people. In the fire sequence, that contrast gives way to the animals’ own predicament: they are driven from the woods, encounter flames blocking their escape, and gather near the fence where the fire has passed. Their return to view among green trees supplies a small but concrete sign of survival amid the estate’s destruction.
