Brinks Development
Remarkably Bright CreaturesBrinks Development is the company Cameron Cassmore contacts while trying to meet Simon Brinks. Its role in this episode is defined by a delayed appointment and an uncomfortable exchange: Cameron’s persistent efforts have not succeeded, but a fabricated business pretext finally gets him an audience.
Contact and Delayed Access
Michelle Yates, calling on behalf of Brinks Development, tells Cameron she is glad to have reached him and apologizes for the delay. Simon Brinks has been out of town, she explains, but has returned and has an opening later that day. The call turns Cameron’s repeated efforts to arrange a meeting into a concrete opportunity, though the short notice leaves him surprised that the appointment is suddenly possible.
Cameron’s Fabricated Pretext
Yates refers to messages Cameron left a couple of weeks earlier, in which he sought a meeting with Simon about a new opportunity. Her question exposes the premise on which the request has been made: Cameron has represented himself as Cameron Cassmore the developer. The narrative distinguishes his initial self-protective description of this as a small fib from the more accurate recognition that it was a fabrication. He confirms the story anyway, amazed that the bold lie has worked after weeks of arriving at closed offices and empty bluffs. Success brings a twinge of guilt along with the chance he has been seeking.
The Seattle Appointment
Yates schedules Cameron for six o’clock and gives him a Seattle address. She instructs him to take the elevator all the way down to the basement, a detail that strikes him as odd. The episode establishes Brinks Development as the point of access to Simon, but leaves the basement office unexplained at this stage. Cameron writes the address on the back of a gas-station receipt; as soon as the call ends, he phones Terry.
