Silver earring
Remarkably Bright CreaturesThe Silver earring is an unidentified woman’s earring discovered beneath the sand in Marcellus’s tank. Its brief appearance draws Cameron and Tova’s attention to an object Marcellus seems to seek out, then disappears into his rocky den; neither its owner nor its later fate is established.
Appearance and Discovery
Cameron notices something shiny barely protruding from the sand near the large rock behind which Marcellus has disappeared. Looking through the glass with Tova, he sees a teardrop-shaped piece of silver about an inch wide. He first wonders whether it might be a fishing lure, then recognizes it as a woman’s earring. The scene identifies its form and location, but gives no clue to how it entered the tank or whom it belonged to.
Marcellus and the Earring
Before the object is exposed, one of Marcellus’s arms reaches from his rocky den and prods the sand with its tip. Cameron says it looks as though the octopus is searching for the shiny thing, though he is unsure whether Marcellus has actually been listening to them. Marcellus lands on the object, sweeps away the sand, and, with a sudden movement, carries the earring into his den. The action leaves the earring in Marcellus’s possession and out of view; the account does not say whether he keeps it or what becomes of it afterward.
The Find’s Significance
The earring is an ordinary human object in an unexpected place: a small remnant lying beneath the sand in an aquarium habitat. Its appearance briefly makes the tank’s hidden spaces visible to Cameron and Tova, while Marcellus’s quick retrieval keeps the object within the octopus’s world. Tova throws back her head and laughs after Marcellus sweeps it away, but the reason for her reaction is not explained. The object’s owner and history remain unknown, and the scene does not connect it to any other person or loss.
