University of Washington

Remarkably Bright Creatures

The University of Washington is linked in the novel to two contrasting educational futures: Terry Bailey’s completed achievement in marine biology and the university Erik would have entered if the summer night that altered his life had never happened. Its brief appearance gives the institution significance as both a real credential and a measure of a future lost.

Terry Bailey’s Degree

A photograph on Terry’s desk shows him in a mortarboard and gown, with a purple-and-gold tassel dangling from his cap. Beside it hangs his bachelor of science degree in marine biology, awarded by the University of Washington summa cum laude. The diploma makes the university’s role concrete: it is the place behind a distinction Terry has earned, displayed among photographs of his family.

Erik’s Unfulfilled Future

For Tova Sullivan, Terry’s photograph and diploma sharpen the absence of a comparable image from her own mantel. Erik would have started at the University of Washington in the fall if that summer night had never happened. The institution therefore stands in the passage not only for Terry’s completed education but also for the academic future Erik did not reach. The contrast is quiet but pointed: one young man’s degree is visibly preserved, while the other’s anticipated beginning survives only as a possibility remembered by his mother.
