1010 Commonwealth Avenue

Robert B. Parker's Wonderland

1010 Commonwealth Avenue is a Boston address that becomes a practical waypoint in Spenser’s investigation of Rick Weinberg’s murder and the surrounding political and business dealings. Its significance comes not from any described features of the building, but from the work conducted there: a meeting with Commander Healy, an exchange in its parking lot, and the observation of Rachel Weinberg’s interview from behind a two-way mirror.

A Meeting Place in the Investigation

Commander Healy agrees to meet Spenser at 1010 Commonwealth Avenue after Spenser tells him that Rick Weinberg filed for divorce two weeks earlier. The address serves as a rendezvous point for sharing a consequential piece of information, connecting the investigation into Weinberg’s private life with the inquiry that follows.

The Envelope and the Interview

In a later episode, Healy hands Spenser a thick, unmarked envelope in the parking lot at 1010 Commonwealth. Spenser carries it to a late-night meeting with Lewis Blanchard in the Boston Public Garden, where he intends to question him. The address therefore marks an exchange in the investigation even though the conversation that follows takes place elsewhere.

Early the next morning, Spenser and Healy are at 1010 Commonwealth for more than two hours, watching Brian Lundquist interview Rachel Weinberg from the other side of a two-way mirror. Rachel begins indignant, then grows angry; Spenser describes the interview as ugly to watch. The location is thus also an observation point, allowing the investigators to witness her questioning without taking part in it.

Narrative Significance

Across these scenes, 1010 Commonwealth shifts from meeting point to site of evidence transfer and then to an interview setting. The recurring address gives the investigation a concrete institutional waypoint, while the two-way mirror sharpens the distinction between questioning and watching: Spenser and Healy can see Rachel’s reactions, but their role in that room is to observe.
